Default cambelt and water pump

does anyone know when the cambelt needs to be changed and is it normal for the water pump to be replaced at the same time?

60k or 4 yrs - whichever is sooner.

Get the pump replaced with a metal one rather than the normal plastic one

Excellent.

He's going in next Friday (hopefully - just waiting to confirm).

He's getting done with authentic VW parts as well.

(Thanks for the tip last year nef).

NO NO dont do it ,stick with the O.E vw plastic one!!
if the metal one fails or develops any wear, the impeller can touch the walls of the engine block and jam which would mean the cambelt would come off and kill your motor, whereas a plastic one will just break and as long as you realise that something is wrong before it overheats too badly there wont be any serious damage

just always have it replaced when the belts are done and it should be fine

Coolio.

This guy is a vw mech who works out of his own place a few days a week. All the parts he uses are authentic VAG parts so I'm happy.

BTW finally got the dealers in Essex to stamp my service book 2 years after they did the service!!!

They wanted me to post my service book to them. I told them no chance and that I would bring it in the next time I was in the area. Just took me 2 years to get there!

my water pump is metal

Surely they should last just as long as the plastic ones though ?

yes they will definitely last longer, but that seems to be the problem!! as people just change the belt , the pump looks ok so gets left longer and over time can develop play in the bearings ,which can lead to the major failure

if you change it at the correct intervals i cant see there being a problem though

Default All done

Well got the service, cam-belt, water pump and MOT done for £350 (blokey took the car to the VW dealers he works at hense the £50 MOT .

Apart from an advisory on the front tyres Syd's all legal for the next year.

Actually with the advisory on the tyres, it's making me think of moving the wheel changes up the agenda. Well if I am having to change the tyres in about 6 months, may as well go the whole hog and get new wheels
