View Full Version : miss fire
a while ago my bug started to feel weird so i took her to a friends VAGCOM and it said there was a miss fire on cylinder 1 so we thought it might be the HT leads so we swapped them out....didnt work so today we have changed the coil pack and that hasnt worked either. Its weird what happens......when i accelerate nothing happens for a little while then it judders into life and its fine with im travelling along its just when i take my foot off the accelerator completely and put it back on again. AND its MUCH worse when my a/c is on.
Any ideas? If i take it to a VW garage will they be able to tell me whats wrong with her AND how to fix it? i seem to be just throwing money at her at the moment and its driving me crazy!!!

The MAF can cause similar problems. Might be worth taking it out and giving it a wash to see if it helps. I'll see if I can find a how to.

The MAF is in the pipe which goes into the airbox. I'll have a looksie to see if I can find some pics from somewhere.

it says:
have cleaned my maf (made by bosch}in about 1hour and solved my cars power loss at high revs. i simply removed the maf using a T20 security torx bit placed maf in an old plastic vitamin pill container and soaked the wire sensors in K&N filter cleaning fluid. i guesed that as K&N made the cleaner specificaly for removing their oil it would work well, and it did. after about 1 hour i removed maf and the wire sensors had gone from black to silver and now look like new.
i put the maf back in my car and it now drives fine with no power loss.
oil from my K&N filter was deffinatly the cause of my maf problems & not a design fault with the {BOSCH}maf itself.
i bought the cleaner from halfords(K&N recharger filter care kit) £9.99.
i am now going to switch to a green filter.
anyone thinking of replacing their maf may want to try this first, its an easy job to do taking little time and exspense (asda sell a security torx bit set for about £4)

2nd bit says:
The reason this guide was created is to help those owners who are having trouble with their MAFs. Symptoms include poor mpg, reduced power, poor engine performance, and often result in the CEL ("check engine light") being triggered. This guide was designed specifically for people who either have had no positive results after multiple dealer visits regarding MAF related service, or are out of their warranty period. If you are still within warranty - get it replaced. The MAF itself is known to cost around £100, although can be purchased from aftermarket suppliers or ebay for around £60. However, try cleaning it first - it may solve your problems!

Tools Required
· Philips head screwdriver
· A helping hand or a vice grip of some sort
· 91% Isopropyl Alcohol (electronic component cleaner)
· Large Ziploc or sealable bag
· Compressed Air spray
· Paper towels
MAF Removal Instructions
Step 1.
Open car bonnet.
Step 2.
Unplug the MAF sensor cables. (Highlighted red in pic1)
http://www.seatenthusiasts.co.uk/for...id=21756&stc=1
Step 3.
Locate the two Philips head screws that secure the top of the airbox and loosen them. (if you still have std airbox – if not, skip)
Step 4.
There is a ring that holds the hose onto the MAF, get your vice grip and press the two tabs together to loosen the ring's grip. (Highlighted blue in pic1)
Step 5.
Lift the airbox's top off by pulling upwards and towards the car cabin. There is a smaller corrugated hose connected to the airbox top directly below the MAF sensor, remove that by pressing the two press points together. (again – only if you have std airbox.)
Step 6.
On either side of the MAF are two Philip’s head screws that hold it in place, remove them.
Step 7.
The hole that the MAF sensor resides in has a rubber ring that creates a seal, also making in difficult to get the sensor out, some wiggling and pulling will free it.
MAF Cleaning instructions
Step 1.
Take the large Ziploc bag and place the MAF sensor in it.
Step 2.
Pour enough Isopropyl alcohol into the bag to completely cover the MAF sensor.
Step 3.
Gently shake the bag to allow the alcohol to pass through the sensor.
http://www.seatenthusiasts.co.uk/for...id=21759&stc=1
Step 4.
Take the MAF sensor out and let the excess alcohol drip off. Dispose of the Isopropyl alcohol according to local laws.
Step 5.
Set the MAF sensor down on a paper towel to drip/air dry. You may want to use the compressed air spray to blow dry parts such as the connector port.
Step 6.
Allow the MAF sensor to dry completely before refitting to car.
http://www.seatenthusiasts.co.uk/for...id=21758&stc=1
Step 8.
Refitting is reversal of removal. The ring that holds the MAF onto the hose can be really tricky to get back on – prevail and it will work!
ahhhhh thanks Ant - youre a diamond.....i could access those pages but not the images....thats what i was after really. But thank you all the same!
