Can anyone help me - on my Beetle V5 a warning light has come on which according to the handbook is the exhaust emission warning lamp (it looks like a picture of an engine with a lightning flash going through it). The car is still driving fine - has anyone had the same problem or can tell me what it is. Is it going to cost me lots of £££££££'s [smiley=sad.gif]

did the handbook say if you could continue driving the car? Jack's passenger air bag light has been on continually for two weeks now - VW manual says to go straight to a dealer to fix it but having spoken to a mate of mine it's not that serious and can wait till my service is done at the end of the month.

Is there a VAG garage you can take it to and just get them to put it on diagnostic this morning??

i had that light on but it turned out to be my colpack - 1 of which had failed - but yes the quality of drive and power of the car was noticeable :(

The manual said take it to a dealer for diagnostics, however ,I have been looking around on the net and it appears it may be related to some probe related to the exhuast emmision - does this sound right to anyone?
Did you take it to a main dealer for the colpack diagnostics?

yeah i thought mine was a lamda probe until took it to dealers.

if its a coilpack they will replace it at no cost to u - as VW had a "silent recall" :)

from my experience on my two litre this light was related to a faulty lamda sensor post catalytic converter. From what I can gather this light can be thrown up by a number of things. Hopfully it will be something faulty sensor related. Best to get the diagnostics plugged in and see what specific fault codes are thrown up. Obviously going to be costly if VW get their hands on it. For them to fix my sensor it came to 300 quid ish... part and labour. It seems like its something I could have done myself.

This happened to mine and i had the lamda sensors changed but two days later it came back on again, then they changed the MAF switch but two days later it came back on again.

Turned out to be a broken vacuum pipe in the end.

The total bill including a window regulator was just over a grand (lucky for me though i didnt have to pay)

Get a garage to check your pipes before changing things willy nilly as it could save you £££££'s

Right - Back off Holiday now and back to reality.
Had the car booked in for tomorrow to have the fault diagnosed, but guess what - the light has now gone out!!!
I rang the garage thinking they could interogate the memory on the ecu, but was told they had to have the light on to find the fault, as the memory may hold past faults. I wpould have thought any past faults would of been cleared - but what do I know.
So now just waiting for the light t come back on.

When is the weston meet or have I missed it.

Light back on now, rang garage can't look at it until Tuesday .
It appears the Weston meet was on July 9th - so I missed it.
Any more local ones being arranged?

Let me Know how you get on.
I have cancelled the garage I was taking it to (non main dealer, but vw specialist) after bad reports from friends of mine.
It is now booked in at vw Heritage at Brislington on the 8th August (Thats the earliest they had a loan car available).

Hi Andy......well i have had a diagnosic run on my bug and it has thrown up a few faults - one of which being the 'secondary air supply' this could mean something like one of the hoses has split under the bonnet (anyone of them!!!) which is a VERY common fault apparently (so check yours). But of course without the diagnositic you cant tell why the light has come on - it could be something more serious......i would take your car for a full diagnosic check to see what faults get thrown up then post up here what they say.......my light is still on as it also said that i have a problem with my 'convenience control unit' which is only £197 to replace plus fitting......grrrrrrrr

The diagnostic usually costs about £36 plus VAT to get a print out of all the faults and then they do a fault finding procedure where they figure out what to do next....thats charged at £67 an hour... :o

let us know how you get on.

Just picked bug up from VW - Appears to be sorted now. The problem was the temperature sensor. Total cost was £100, which is far better than I was expecting.
Just got to take the Passat in tomorrow for its MOT and service - more money!!!

Its a 2001 Beetle V5. The majority of the cost was for diagnostics at VW ,the actual sensor was around £25. But that is the only fault we have had with it
