Went to test drive a bug with a friend. Whilst out the ESP warning light came on once or twice. If you stop and restart the engine, it seems to go. Owner siad it' done it before but never seems to have actually cuased an issue.
Any ideas?

Okay - no responses. This either means nobody knows, or everyone is ignoring me :o
Anyway - happened another few times. And, get this, swap my wheels to the new bug, same thing???? :-?
VW manual says it may switch off the ESP system if the little computer deems it safer??? WTF??? Only way to get it back is stop the ignition and start again....
Anyone else had anything similar? My wheels the problem????
HELP!!!!!!!!??????????/ :(

Is one of your wheels buckled slightly? Jack the Bug up and give all the wheels a spin - if one doesn't spin in a 'round' shape, then that's the problem.
I saw a Golf on a prog on TV which had a similar problem with the ESP light... and it had 3 buckled alloys! :o
antix_v2
8th July 2006, 13:24
Can't think it would be buckled alloys - they are almost new (march). One does have kerbing where I had to take evasive action. I'm now wondering :'(.
Altho - the first time this light thing happened was about 2 weeks ago - long since the kerb/alloy incident.
I'd of thought it would be from the word go???
Could be an electrical fault maybe????
Shamrockez
8th July 2006, 13:29
Yeah could be an electrical fault. I don't have ESP on Robbie so I haven't experianced this problem ;D
Have a look at the alloy tho, just in case.

How obvious should it be - swapped alloys just last night - nothing looked odd

When they did it on the TV they put it up on the lifters and span the wheels and looked from the 'inside' of the wheel as that's the weakest part.

bit of an effort i know but may be worth checking all your bulbs are in nice and tight, i had a similar problem with brake lights, some days it would come up on dash because i had gone over a bump and dislodged one of the brake bulbs, then if i hit another bump light would work again and warning light would go off! May be worth a try! think its only brake lights though, not indicators. give it a try if you can be bothered!
Shamrockez
10th July 2006, 07:01
Yeah brake lights can do some weird things to your warning lights! When my brake light switch went, the glow plug lights flashed! :o

12th July 2006, 11:03
Well i remember when i put my rear spoiler on Doodle and blew one of the fuses, the brake light fuse, the ESP warning light kept coming on all the time.
So it could well be something linked to the brake lights, or fuses, it did happen in Doodle a few times, but not happened in Noodle as yet :D

That was the TV show 'The Garage' on Discovery Real Time, about a firm of English Mechanics in Marbella if anyone is wondering.
How anoracky is that! ;D

My ESP light used to come on every now and then and it never happened before i put the 18's on it ?
I just turn it off/on again and it clears, i have used a vagcom to see if any errors come up but it comes up clear.
i dont think you have anything to worry about, maybe the ECU is just learning that it has new wheels (different weight ratios) and it might settle down.
My ESP light hasnt come on for about two months now, it just stopped coming on and i never did find out why it was coming on in the first place.

She likes to spin the ol' wheels cornering under power without the ESP.... Now I REALLY wish I had rear wheel drive.....

Following on from before about lights
Mubsie's ESP warning light used to come on all the time, i then had a light out on the back and since i've had a new bulb in, the ESP light (touch wood) has not come on since?
Maybe nothing to do with it, but i just click on when Nico said that. :)

I am constantly having problems with ESP warning light. Initially thought to be the tracking sensor and then the complete sensor unit, both of which were replaced FOC by VW due to the fact had only done 28,000 miles. Light went out for about a week then came on again, believed to be loose connection which was rectified. Then came on after a couple of months, this time solved by new brake switch was faulty. this was less than a week ago and light has just come on again. Just had tracking done and passed MOT - any suggestions where to go next???? :(

Any bad kurbing or dents in the rims?

Gerties used to come on and VagCom flagged it up as a faulty Brake Pressure Regulating Valve, which was £122 for the part plus fitting. Maybe thats the problem?

Hi,
We're picking up a new ESP dashboard switch from the dealers tomorrow as not only does Betty's ESP light come on, the switch itself doesn't "click" like the other switches when you use them :-[
If this doesn't work (and we don't know if it will), Betty will be put on a fault code reader to find out what the problem is.
Looking back, we had to replace the high level brake light just after we'd bought her as someone hadn't spotted that it wasn't working [smiley=shocked.gif] Would this cause a fault code and would this still be in the computers memory?

ooh I'm so glad someone else has been having this problem. I bought my Bug 1 year ago - and driving out of dealers the ESP light came on - and has been in garage 8 times in 6 months. Hasnt appeared in 6 months - and re-appeared yesterday again.
I specifically registered with this site to get to the root of the problem. Hellppppppppp!!! Is it dangerous to have the ESP light on?
Someone help! A (single - if that helps!)blonde in distress!!!

youll probably find it happens when you hit a pot hole or man hole more so, its normal and a safety feature

Rims and everything seem fine. Amazingly for no apparent reason warning light has gone out again for the moment, so just keeping my fingers crossed until it happens again! :-?

Have just been and rooted out my receipt from VW for this. My ESP light came on within 3 days of me having JoJo and it drove me insane *:o everytime I took it to the garage the bloody thing had gone off therefore they said "sorry we need the light on to find the fault" I was about to give up when I finallly managed to get it into VW when it was on and this is what it said on the receipt:
REPLACE LAT ACC SENSOR AND YAW SENSOR AS REQD
Which would have cost if it hadn't been warrenty job £606.55 *:o :o :o
But (touch wood) its been fine.
I hope this helps, if you want anymore info/part no.s *pm me *:)

The Yaw sensor and other bit that JoJo had done was exactly what was replaced when I first had the problem.
Don't wish to dishearten anyone but unfortunately this didn't rectify anything long term. Light still comes on randomly! :-? :-/

mine comes on too every now and then...i just turn it all off and back on again too...its never had any serious kncks or bumps and tracking is perfect. I think i might be having probs with my dash lights in general as my heating ones etc have blown again about a day after i replaced them (via. Lucy's how to!) So i thought it might just be me. Anyone found any resolve for this?? :-/

Absolutely. These "problems" are just quirks of their personalities. Doesn't do anything to change my feelings for my beetle tho! ::) :P

had that happen to me took it in they changed air filter in car, came on a again last week been telling them that my car sounds like it is going to cut out when I turn the ignition and they told me oh its noting and then last week took it in cause of ESP light and my air filter was cracked, now my car sounds normal again and it doesn't drink as much petrol whoo whoo

i'm of the opinion that the new beetle designers were disappointed at the cars lack of character compared to the old aircooled bugs , so certain quirks were designed in .
dash lights and brake switches are just two .

My EPS light comes up on my bug every now and again, but i do believe thats because my electric central locking isn't working properly. Its probably nothing to be too alarmed about.

I've only noticed my ESP light come on a couple of times, both when there was snow on the ground and I had a bit of front wheel spin. Is this what it's supposed to do??

ours comes on sometimes, seems to be no cause for it what so ever, the only alarming thing is sometimes when it comes on the ABS light also flashes, and the airbag light, and the rev counter bounces around eraticly (even though the cars not braking and the engine revs dont acctually drop) and we get a horribly annoying warning beep!
Its really starting to worry us as it seems more frequent now, but cant afford to take it anywhere as still paying for the last trip to the garage and its so close to christmas!
have been considering buying a vag com lead from ebay, anyone got any idea what there like?
or even better has anyone local got it? lol

Thanks paul, anything is worth a try. Also I was fiddling with the ESP switch and the blue coolant light went off.. seems like the electrics are the problem maybe. Any body had the same problems?

Hi guys I have a VW Lupo my esp light kept coming on and sometimes stayed on throughout whole journeys! (even drove to Plymouth and back to the Isle of Wight with it on!)
I took it into my local garage(not w VW dealer) who replaced the manifold pressure sensor. The light has now disappeared and never come back! .. Don't know if that's of any use to anyone.
The ESP light seems to be something that nobody seems to know much about or what causes it to come on. But from what I can gather it's usually another electronic fault which triggers the ESP.
Hope you get your Bug fixed soon!

It'll almost certainly be a dodgy wheel sensor, wiggle em a bit and spray some WD40 on em, had something similar on one of my old bugs and this was what caused it - moisture in the wheel sensor where the car wasn't driven much.
However - it could be something more serious going, my current NB started doing this, then the handbrake warning and ESP lamps lit up - turned out to be my ABS control module - £1500 if I had it done by a stealer.
Best bet is VagCom the car before you buy it :)
Wow just realised the original post was from 2006!!!
