Iv not had to top her up in the 9 months iv had her, a couple of weeks ago the oil light came on and we put half a litre in her and that brought her back to half way up the marker on the dipstick. I checked her before and it it just touching the minimum level on the dipstick :(
Also lately she has started making a funny noise when I start her up, most of all when the engines cold, a funny tinny sounding noise :o any ideas?

What exactly does that do (remember im a complete know nothing about engines!) will it stop the oil consumption?

If you have a 2.0L that is completely normal, they usually make a tappety noise on start up (goes off in a couple of mins?) if you read the hand book this is completely normal. *Also 2.0L are notorious for using oil, when I had Gertie on long runs she wouldn't use any oil, but pottering around she'd use loads! *I took it back to VW but was told its all normal. *I wouldn't worry.

It just seems odd that its started doing it all of a sudden. Shes due a service so maybe the filter just needs changing :-?

Gertie was like that, when I got her she didn't use any for 3 months then started using a fair bit, like I said I went back to VW and they told me it was normal, unfortunately 2.0s use a lot of oil :(

make sure you use the right grade oil cos if you just start bunging fully syth in its too thin for the 2.0l engine

15/40 semi syth you should be useing
and dont put minral oil in :-?

Its best to top it up with whats already in there, mixing oil viscosity/type is not good for the engine, if you've had it serviced by VW use their oil, it isn't any more expensive than Halfords, at least then you'll deffo have the right stuff. :)

I wouldn`t have thought too thick oil would cause a rattling noise - I wouldn`t take too much notice of Halfords staff either ::)
Check your manual for what oil you should be using or as Luke says just go to the dealer and buy it from them.

Check the handbook/service book for what it says. With Robbie I have to use an oil which is up to VW 505 spec. Altho I think that's a diesel thing.

its happened to me!!!!
had ziggy till may and checked the oil a while ago, had a panic attack as i thought i had run out but my dipstick is just weird so was ok.

well the oil light came on last night so i bought some oil from the garage (vw 500.00 i think) as they didn't have the longlife one (vw 503 00) but my manual said i could use 0.5l of that.

the light is still on even tho the dipstick shows theres enough oil in there. its a yellow light that just stays on. the manual says it should go off when you open the bonnet and when theres enough oil in.

i tried to get more oil from halfords this morning but they didn't have the vw 503 either (think its 0w50?!).
he now has 1 litre of vw 500 00 in him and the oil level is high enough on the dipstick (i think- as i said, mines weird).

can anyone help? he's being such a naughty boy!! :'(
