Just found this item on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TDI-Chip-Tuning-Box-for-VW-Sharan-New-Beetle-Touran_W0QQitemZ8072484126QQcategoryZ32094QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Just wondering what the hell they are and do they actually work? :)

It's some kind of power giving wotsit I think.... I have no idea if they work or not, but I wouldn't want to trust ebay too much.

Nah its one of those too good to be true things i reckon, dont want to break Noodles engine! :)

It seens too cheap for the amount of power it claims. I dunno, it could be true, but as you said, and engine break wouldn't be good!
Get him down to Revo or Jabba - wooooosh! :D

Stay well clear of any of that shat mate.

If you want more power mate you need to do it properly, all them tuning box jobbies do is increase fueling (or so I believe) not a long term or efficicent solution to more power.

Most tunign boxes fool the cars ecu into overfueling thus giving a bit more kick - some a re a little more complex and a couple of guys I Know with lower bhp GOlf TDis rate them, but I wouldnt touch one. I'd rather pay more and get a remap done - although thats also a shadey business.

Yep, I'd second that. It'll be a resistor in a 'posh box'. Plug it in and you Ecu will think it needs to pump more fuel. Great in the short term, but you'll more than likely start shagging engine components very quickly.
Ask Gordon (orcho53) about his dragon chip. i think it's a proper ECU remap.

Hi Folks
Yes totally agree have done work with these so called wonder boxes. They are crap with a capital C
don't be fooled by the fancy box of air. all they are is a 10 ohm resistor you can buy them from Maplin for about 10p if you want one I will give you one for the price of a stamp.
all they do is go is series with the intake air temp. sensor to fool the engine management in to thinking the air is cooler than it actually is. because of this the EMC injects more fuel because it thinks that the incoming air is denser than it really is, so, the EMC adds more fuel to keep the fuel/air ratio correct.
the EMC has a fuel map that provides different fuel to air ratios for different engine loads, the fuel ratio is monitored by the lambda sensor sometimes the EMC fuels a bit on the lean side at idle and part throttle for example at other times (mainly under heavy load, accelerating & full throttle) the EMC is set to over fuel the engine slightly ( excess fuel helps control pinking and cylinder temp) so in actrual fact at this time you need LESS fuel to get more power. but because the EMC is adding further enrichment because of the incorrect signal from the air temp sensor it adds even more fuel. so you loos power.
If you want to play with this kind of thing yourself ( be careful it can be fun you will certainly lean alot but remember you can ruin your engine) and you can or know someone who can build electronic kits. go to
http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?category=4396&ecomsvr=1034821012
look at the book called
High Performance Electronic Projects for Cars
if you follow the link to automotive kits look at kit number KC5385 this unit can be used to remap the air mas meter (or almost any other sensor) you will also need the programmer KC5386 to set it up
and make sure you get the book although their are instructions in the kits the book tells you alot more about playing with tuning
Hope this is of interest to someone :)

Now that`s what I call a first post ! :o
That`s what I`d understood though - they are just a resistor that makes the engine thinks it`s cold so dumps more fuel in, thereby washing the bores leading to premature wear

Even the 'better' tuning boxes from tunit etc only can ever control fuelling on diesel applications.
To get the most then you will need a remap as then boost control can also be managed.
