LOL, i cant believe how much he has changed...looking at the original photos of him, he is unrecognisable isnt he!
I was hoping you would post some pics of him as standard to see the difference!
Gonna give Noodle a wash today ready for the meet tonite, hopefully then i will get some cool piccies of him :)

Excellent, can't wait to see Noooodle :D
Yeah Robbie's changed so much - I doubt any previous owners would recognise him! My friend Paul (who runs the Seat meets) was watching the DVD of Volksfest Wales and he said he was thinking "ah, there's a red Bug like Lucy's" and it wasn't till he'd finished watching the DVD that he realised that little red Bug was mine!

Cheers Ray :)
Poor Robbie had been a bit abandoned before I got him, so I had to make up for it! Poor thing was growing moss, had 3 dodgy/flat tyres and not been used for 6 months. So I've had to pamper him and drive him loads to make up for things :D

Ok, so they're not new... but they (and he) look a bit different since the last time he had them...
I've painted his original Monte Carlo wheels while and the inner bit red - Robbie style! :D

I've only done one to see if it would work, and it did so I'll be doing the others soon :) Looks at bit funny with 3 18s on and one 16 lol. Wouldn't be so bad if the tyre on the 16 was bigger, but it's lower profile than standard....

Shamrockez
9th January 2007, 13:53
Just ordered some coilovers.
Daryl will prob tell me off cos they're not posh ones, but I don't have enough money to have standards ;D
Hopefully this will cure the bouncyness and get him a little lower on the 18s 8-)
BarneyBug
9th January 2007, 14:04
Luce, any lower and you'll have sparks where he's touching the floor!!!!! ;D
......Barney deffo needs to be lower theres a huge gap between the arches and the tyres :( the ride in him is bouncy at the mo tho is there anything we can do to cure it?? would going lower make him more bouncy???
Shamrockez
9th January 2007, 14:07
Lowered shocks would probably solve that because they're stiffer and designed to be used with a lowered car. That's what i was gonna do till looking at all the different kinds of shocks confused me and i found coilovers which were less than that lol.
Robbie's more bouncy cos he's on petrol springs and the diesel engine is heavier - hence he sits lower than 40mm at the front.
The good thing about coilovers is that I can adjust the ride height for my winter wheels (which make him lower) so he doesn't scrape quite so much and lower him on the 18s when he doesn't scrape quite so much.

Shamrockez
16th January 2007, 17:29
To be honest I have no idea :-[ Daryl said I should get some, so I should! As far as i understand they stop the ARB knocking on the driveshafts on the earlier (pre 02??) Bugs.
billybug

Shamrockez

Don't worry - I'll take lots of pics of it fitted. I'll probably get the garage to do it when they do the coilovers cos it'll be much easier on a ramp.
DARYL_-_BMS
5th February 2007, 12:26
Your right Luke, should be fitted on all nb's when your properly dropping the car. I think you can get around it by fitting an aftermarket anti roll bar that clears the driveshafts, Gratboy (Adam) done this I think.
Where's the coilovers? Chrome that sump!
Shamrockez
5th February 2007, 12:37

Shamrockez

Yes and i don't think so.... not for less than £300 delivered!
A mirror - knowing me I'd forget, run over it and give myself 7yrs bad luck! :-[
DARYL_-_BMS
5th February 2007, 12:57
Ahh, they've probably got some sort of dampening built in already, 30% or so... In all honestly, I think the rears look and are designed shiit - same as mine, they should really be the same as the front, the suspension leg etc, instead you get a shock and an adjustable spring GAY!
You'd probably get a puncture too running over a mirror.
Shamrockez
5th February 2007, 13:08
True.. I could do without them too...
I don't really care what they look like or how he rides, as long as he looks a bit lower then i'm happy ;D

You will worry about the ride when it's going lower!!
Shamrockez

I doubt they'd damage him cos they've snapped so much ;D It won't be long till they fall off tho I don't think!
The ride is better - he handles better, and altho he's still bouncy, he just bounces one when he hits a bump rather than about 3 times ;D I think my shocks had had their life - as far as I can see they were the original ones.
Don't think I'll ever be able to go up onto your drive again, Vic ;D Can't wait to get my wheels back - gonna be about 3 weeks tho :(

How's the ride?
Shamrockez
25th February 2007, 18:59
It's a bit better than springs - bit firmer. But I haven't really had the chance to give him too much stick yet. Corners are most amusing as we're now playing a game to see how many scrape noises we can get round each corner ;D keeps me amused! :-[

Yeah I think if I put him down any more I'd never be able to get anywhere - as you say the sport front is lower so scrapes on everything anyway and I'm a little scared of buckling my sills on speedbumps!
Ali
25th February 2007, 20:39
Robbie looks great Luce - why are you so obsessed with getting him as low as possible???
Why are you wheels gonna be 3 weeks for the powder coating? What colour you goin for?

Wheels will be 3 weeks as they're being done by my Mum's next door neighbour in Leicestershire and she's bringing them back with her to a horse show near Gloucester in 3 weeks :) Don't really want to do 300 miles to get them if they'll be coming down this way in a few weeks. He said he'd do this this weekend - so hopefully they're done by now. They'll be white - naturally ;)

The cat is really annoying me now :( I want to get the bonnet resprayed to get rid of all the scratches and stone chips, but I just know as soon as I do, the damn thing will be sitting on him again and scratching the new paint! >:(

thanks :D Erm.. I've never measured the drop, but i recon it's around 70mm. On coilovers. It's about the max drop you can get away with for using daily - I was doing 30k a year in him on a mix of roads.

Ah - the mods I've done to him didn't cost a fortune ;) The bumper was £40 off ebay, the grills... significantly more , the coilovers were £300, the wheels were £700 plus £250 to powdercoat them, the leather was £500. We fitted everything except the coilovers ourselves so labour costs weren't much, and that was over 3yrs - inc birthday/christmas pressies/money. The interior bits I colour coded myself as well as the mirrors.
You just have to look out for reasonably priced stuff, have a go yourselves and have some imagination to get yourself an individual Bug :D

Cheers - I had an imagine in my head for him as soon as I bought him, and it took me 3yrs to get there, then I had to retire him :( I absolutely love him to bits (as longer standing member of Evvo or CC will clarify lol) so not having him living with us is really hard :( and when we last saw him I almost cried! I think he's so pretty - I could never get bored of just sitting and looking at him - unfortunaly he knows this and uses it to his advantage - he knows if he breaks, I'll buy him shiny new things and make him all better! So I know what you mean about stuff breaking! I think it's just the Bug testing your loyalty! i.e with the whole boot bouncing thing - he always did that to me, yet he never did it to Steve - mostly because he used to threaten him with the scrap man if he didn't behave - and Robbie belived him!
Yeah we like tinkering with them too. The coilovers scared us so we got the local garage to fit them and do the tracking at the same time.
You just have to keep your eyes out for bargains coming up on ebay or on forums. If you go for Votex bumpers, make sure all the grills and lights are included with it, as you can't buy them seperatly (unlike the V5 Sport front, which you can).

We've been thinking of going for black strips on ours as a friend of the family is a sign writer so might not cost alot but not sure yet!
Ive got £190 to spend on ebay at the moment (sold a few bits this week) so am currently looking for bargains!! although think parents may kill me if I buy a bumper to store here lol!!!
We have so many idea's for him but everything seems so expensive lol! think its going to have to be slow steps, but we're never ever selling our bugl :-) even said if we won the lottery she'd stay and be pampered with new toys galore :-) we both love it so much!!!!

Black stripes would be cool - for referance it cost me £117.50 for Herbie's fitted - which was 3 stripes, 2 large gumballs and 2 smaller gumballs, and 5hrs to fit! I think thick black stripes near the centre looks awesome on yellow cars.
If you're going to keep it forever, then there's no rush into getting stuff - my best advice would be to find out what you want, then start to look for it. That way you don't end up with stuff that you don't really like so much just because it was cheap, that you'll be wanting to change soon. And if you can't find exactly what you want, think of ways to 'make' it. i.e I wanted to get some chunky 5 spoke wheels. I couldn't find any in the design I liked, so ended up getting the EMPIs and powercoating them.

oh it definately wont ever be sold lol :-) have seen lots of lowering springs I like the look of but fitting is scary lol but thats a job to be done deffinately, We both love the look of the RS6 replica's on the beetle, love the new halo style front lights, other than that its gonna be a bit of waiting till we see something we want and going for it!!!
Already got spare centre dash parts to sand down and spray to match body colour :-) and custom fitted our sat nav cradle to the centre console ash tray hole, and a hardwired snooper on the dash lol oooo sooo many things to do, just get so excited and want them all done at once :-(
hopefully one day our bugl will be up to the standard of robbie :-) then we can go in the show and shines without being embaressed (ended up in it at bug jam, SO embaressing, damn security guards!)

Well it sounds like you know what you want :) you just gotta keep your eye out for it. If you hang around some Golf forums you might be able to get the alloys 2nd hand a save a few bob :)

Awww Robbie!!!
When do you think you'll have him out again???
I have to say (knowing Luce and Robbie fairly well) Robbie is probably the closest thing to Herbie I've ever met!

I'm not sure yet - I can't see myself being able to afford to put him back on the road until at least this time next year, possibly longer :( but on the plus side my parents are having a private road put in through a couple of their fields so I'll be able to drive him up and down that when I go to visit :D
I think it's quite possible that he's Herbie's naughty younger brother.... he's certainly got more personality than the rest of our cars put together, that's for sure!

It was from the states when I got it. You can get them over here now for around about £120 I think it is - search for sumps and you should find a link.
I can't fault it though - it's recieved some heavy wacks and not been damaged.
