After owning him for nearly 3 months he's finally finished.

He's been in Classy Campers for some minor resto work and had the following done:

Heater channel repaired
Both rear quarter bottoms replaced and entire rear quarters resprayed
Split on bonnet welded and bonnet resprayed
All holes around rear quarter area repaired
Door jambs and heater channels painted
Edges of doors repainted
entire car mopped
Rear arches undersealed
Heater channels undersealed

His interior is finally fitted and he's all polished! :D

He looks so shiny!!! :D :D :D

Heres piccies:

He's a 1958 Swedish Bug, I bought him knowing he was a leftie :)

What year did the model change to the newer look rather than the Al Pacino looking Bug. It still scares me but what you've done to it must be incredibly rewarding. Do you have a link to a thread with pics on what Harry looked like before and maybe a pic of the engine ?

I think so, if that was the next model. How many different models have there been ?

billybug
1st April 2007, 23:00
Harrys a '58 so nearly 50 years old, he's an early model 'big window' bug, meaning he has a big rear window and a bigger windscreen. Before him they looked pretty much the same just with a smaller Oval window and before '53 they had split oval windows.

The bugs changed from how Harry looks in '67 when they changed to upright headlights like in the pic Lucy's posted and the bonnet and engine lid shapes were changed. In the 70's they 1302 and 1303 bugs were introduced (only for a few years tho) these had Macpherson strut front suspension and the 1303 hada more curved windscreen.

They haven't changed in size or height tho, perhaps Harry looks a bit different because he's all black and stock height? :)

Is this where Herbies number 53 came from ? Was Herbie the same as yours ?

Shamrockez
1st April 2007, 23:04
In very basic terms, there's been 6.

Split window Bug 1948 -53 I think:

Oval, 53-57:

Big window pre 67 1958-1967- What Harry is.:

Post 68 Bug - 68 Onwards:
http://www.edmunds.com/media/advice/specialreports/instant.car.classics/70.vw.beetle.500.jpg

1302 Beetle:

1303 Beetle
http://www.superbeetles.com/galleries/gallery_images/IMG_0065.jpg

That's the basic model changes. I could go all geeky into rear light changes, door handle changes and window sizes - but that would be boring lol

Herbie was a 63 Bug I think.. 53 wasn't his year.

The number 53 was made up by Disney I think, there is a reason (On one of my DVD's ;D :-[) but I can't rememeber now - its nothing to do with model the years tho. Yes Herbie is the same 'model' as mine but with a few differences, Herbie was a '63 bug and a US bug as well, so he had the same bumpers as Harry (Towel rails or 'US Spec'), Harry originally had blade bumpers but I bought these for him instead as I prefer them, but he didn't have Semaphores (Harry should have but they've been replaced by ears, which are basically bolt on flashing bulbs instead of the Semaphores) Herbie had wing mounted front indicators, a rag top and different rear lights, just to be really geeky as well ;D Herbie had a fully syncro single case gearbox and a later more powerful engine.

Goodness how anoracky do I sound ;D ;D

Well Harry is in today having his engines swapped, he's also had a new clutch fitted, so hopefully he will be zoom zooming along really well! I get him back tomorrow.

Bought some more shiny bits today as well,

Some front stone chip guards
A Flat 4 Glovebox Handle
some new VW key blanks from Karmann Konnection, as Harrys keys aren't the best and may break soon so I need some new ones!
and a Fire Extinguisher - £5 off in Halfords, thought it woud be a wise investment, thought i'd mount it under the dash just in case!

billybug
8th April 2007, 23:01
Another Harry update, he now has his new (well 2nd hand) engine all fitted and touch wood it seems much much better than his old one, he's had a new clutch fitted too as his was nackered, and this engine has a bigger flywheel, I spent today under the car repairing the clutch conduit plate that had snapped as the new clutch was juddering terribly because of it, thanks to Lucy's welding Harry is now judder free!!! :D

I've aso fitted his front set of chrome stonechip guards.

Heres some piccies from our drive out to Cirencester in him yesterday :D

Some of you may have seen it at Ultimate Dubs Telford this year. Bit different to the new ones you all drive. Just waiting for Chris to narrow it at some point when he gets chance.

 COOL!!!

It was dead easy to fit, drill two holes for the side brackets and screw em in.

Then wobble the shelf, realise the brackets are crap (as I thought they would be) and the shelf can tilt backwards, so cable tie the rear of the shelf to the steering column, now its solid as a rock :D

Just bought this off a guy on Restowagen, I reckon it'll be a cool period accessory to have in Harry - And i'll actually have some toons to listen to as I drive along! Its FM, and comes with the mounting kit (which is pretty rare apparently)

Just need to buy an aerial and some speakers now :D

17th May 2007, 15:05
Well Harrys radio arrived yesterday, and it works really well (when out the car) but I need to wire it into the car, although i'm not 100% convinced it looks right in Harry as its bigger than I thought and it hangs off the bottom of the dash.

I'll post some pics later for opinions.

I have bought some small speakers and ordered a dual mount aerial from VW Heritage, which I'll need anyway as either way Harrys gonna have a radio! LOL!

1958 Harry
19th May 2007, 21:53
Righty, had a busy day!

I fitted Harry's 'picnic' radio and car kit and it works great! Not the most fantastic of sound, but adequate enough! Also fitted his new twin mount aerial - what a palava that was! One of the bloody screw threads snapped off, so I had to 'bodge' it back together - all sorted now tho :D

Although I have to say drilling holes into your cars wings is SCARY!!!

I didn't get his window trims fitted in the end, the bloody Autoglass man didn't know how to fit them, useless! :( So they are gonna 'research' and come back and fit them later this week.

Anyways heres some piccies of todays work :D

He was rude too, got there and said, 'thats not a quick job, I finish at 12 I aint doing that now' I got rather ****ty with him then and demanded to speak to his boss, he then looked at it and said he didn't know how to fit them anyway! Well Harry is gonna be a lucky boy next week!

On Wednesday the RAC are fitting his chrome window trims, then on Friday he's in Cleeve Motors (Classic car place near my work) having his underside/arches waxoyled :D

Before that, this weekend, its change his oil again to fit his new sump plate (can't stop his leaking for some reason, I reckon its distorted), check the clutch is adjusted properly, give him a good polish (again :D) and general clean, all ready for his big adventures and the Weston Meet next Friday :D

Shamrockez
24th May 2007, 23:58

IMHO (i really wish i'd of had a magners or 3 for this as i've a feeling it maybe long, but i know you'll both love reading it ;) )

As a self confessed Newbie to the Beetle/VW scene. (Although i should point out my cousin used to do up old bugs and still would be, but that's another story and yes he's still around :) .)

When i first saw Harry, a few moons ago, i remember saying he scared me :(

But i have been paying close attention to his W.I.P. thread, as a Newbie i feel i should extend my love to all VW's new or old :o :p Also if someones taking the time to post pics of their W.I.P. it deserves a reply from the heart :)

Watching the restoration project has intrigued me but i won't go into listing everything and commenting on how good each episode was. As that would just be too long a post ;)

I'm now going to cut it amazingly short now and just say what an Amazing Result. I did wander what you mean't about the Chrome on the windows. I couldn't see it would make that much difference but it really finishes off Harry. It's now a Masterpiece, even a (mobile) Museum Piece. It's truly Stunning now.

Now i may seem Biased as i've been lucky enough to travel in Harry, but for a Bug of his Age and Pedigree and all the Love and Affection and Time that's gone into him. You should pat yourselves on the back. Much better result than those things on TV that are done in a day.

So to sum up: I'm speechless at the way Harry has turned out, no more nightmares here. It's truly a mesmorising Bug and should set a standard for just how well you can bring back to Life an Old Bug.

ThankYou both, Luke and Gemma (hope the spellings right  ) For a truly informative and knowledgeable time with seeing how Harry has come on since when i first joined evvo  I would say that with Customi zing your Bug theres never an end in sight, but with Harry i do believe that he's done and undusted.

Thanks and can't wait to see him at a show soon.

Got another bit for him yesterday, a rear ashtray, it was missing so I got one off Ebay for the princely sum of £3.74 :D

He's also having his underbelly Waxoyled today so he'll be nicely protected from any nasty wet weather :D

Had a minor problem last night tho, one of his new (less than 2 months old!) wiper arms decided to snap in half at the base! Luckily I managed to find his old one so a bit of dremelling later and he has two wipers again, the base is a bit manky tho and needs repainting so i'll get some silver paint and redo it at some point.

I'll post some piccies later :D

Another Harry Update...

After his clutch started making a weird noise - again! We decided to pull the engine, whilst it was out I decided to repaint the tinware and underseal around the engine bay (pics to follow tomorrow)

Also need to replace the gearbox input shaft seal, and rear gearbox mounts, refit the clutch repease bearing, and put it all back together!

Hopefully the weird noise will be gone - if it aint i'm stumped!!!

25th July 2007, 00:16
looks fantastic Luke, I bet you're well chuffed

have you sorted the clutch issue out yet? noisey clutches or clutch 'drag' when in neutral are normally down to faulty release bearings in my experience. Where-as a slipping clutch is one or more blades of the pressure plate broken.

1958 Harry
26th July 2007, 17:27
It was a rattling noise, like something was catching, it had a new clutch 1000 miles ago when the engines were swapped, then the release bearing started making a noise, so the garage replaced it, but 20 miles later I get this strange rattling noise, so as the garage are useless i've decided to look myself, all seems OK, but after inspecting the bell housing and flywheel it looks as if it might have been catching the inside of the bell housing, when we removed the engine it looked as tho it was in on one side more than the other so i'm hoping thats what caused it, i've also replaced the rear gearbox mounts, and the release bearing (again) just in case.

1958 Harry
26th July 2007, 18:48
Decided i'm gonna do the flywheel oil seal as well whilst the engines out as I can feel oil behind the flywheel, Luce you done this before? I know Jim has can you guys give me a hand tomorrow?

Shamrockez
26th July 2007, 19:04
I've never done it - I've watched Tom and Jim do it tho. Have u asked him if he's free? Cos he has the flywheel locking tool and clutch alignment tool (or Tom does, one or the other).

Might be worth getting 2 seals cos when we did Nijinski's the seal broke!

1958 Harry
26th July 2007, 19:07
Jim replied on VZi, I asked if he's free but he hasn't replied yet. Hopefully he is and GSF have some in stock, then we can get Harrys engine all done and refitted, otherwise I don't think he'll make Sunday :(

He's alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Weird noises have gone and fingers crossed so have all oil leaks!!! :D :D :D

The weird noise turned out to be a loose flywheel! The stupid crap garage who fitted the engine forgot to tighten the flywheel - its a good job I decided to change the rear oil seal otherwise i'd have stuck the engine back in and the flywheel might have fallen off!!!

If you are in the Bristol area NEVER EVER EVER take your aircooled to MAD Workshop, they do the shonkiest crappest and worst work possible and charge extortianate prices for the privilege!

At least you know what it was now, and that it's fixed :) and you have the satisfaction of knowing you fixed it yourself and you now know how to remove and fit an engine :D and that removable rear valances are the way forward ;) ;)

And yes my Dizzy cap is taped together, it snapped clean in half when we put the engine back in, and its such an early Dizzy I can't buy a cap from GSF or anywhere, luckily Moby from VZi has one NOS brand new in the box :D

Harrys new Dizzy cap has arrived and is fitted, i've also ordered some new bits :D

A Gene Berg Dipstick and sender, and some EMPI sill protectors, so once they arrive and are fitted i'll post piccies :D

A bit of an update on my Harry thread since the site went down he's had some more shiny bits/other bits fixed...

Firstly...

I've removed his 'ears' (you can see them on him in this pic)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/DSC00879.jpg

And refitted him with some nice shiny Semaphores (painted courtesy of Mark at VDub Resto aka Classy Campers)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/13112007074.jpg

On the car...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/14112007081.jpg

And waving

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/th_14112007001.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/?action=view&current=14112007001.flv)

I've also got some other bits (not got pics yet tho)

an original '58 interior light
an original '58 - MPH speedo (just need to set the mileage to his correct mileage)

After about £100 of bits I've got the Eberspacher Auxillary heater working in him (that with his excellent heaters means he's like an effing oven!)

This is it in the right of the pic...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/DSC_0011.jpg

Also winging its way to me is another 1200 (28 PICT) carb as the Brazilian crap Carb on him is well - crap and causing a nasty flat spot so hopefully this carb will be good and he'll run like a dream - if not the carb will be sent off to Gowers and Lee for a full rebuild.

Also he SAILED through his MOT :D Two advisories - one for slight play in the King Pins and another for slight play in the steering box - both can be adjusted out so I'm a happy boy :D Harrys treat for being a good boy was some Semaphores. We did have a slight Mishap on the MOT on the brake test I pulled his hand brake up so hard the button popped out! Its an easy fix just slide the pin out clip it together and put the pin back in - that is unless you lose the ratchet in the transmission tunnel :o so a new ratchett was bought from Ghia 57 on VZi along with the Semis. All fixed now tho :D

Another few things that he's had as well:

New plugs & leads
New Coil
New Points condensor etc
New Dizzy
Old Dizzy re-fitted
New fuel filter
Small piece of Tinware that was missing has now been fitted.

Also on the 9th I'm having the ****ey/tacky EMPI Crankshaft Pulley replaced with a nice original shiny black VW Pulley :) his engine will look nice and stock then :)

An update on my dodgy running saga - I think its the dizzy so a brand new Bosch Distributor has been ordered for him, had to get it from Just Kampers as VW Heritage were out of stock, should be here tomorrow so I'll fit it and get him all properly timed up and fingers crossed he should be running as sweet as a nut!

If not I'm stumped as EVERYTHING except the fuel pump and the engine itself is brand new on him!

Then its the pulley swap next Sat, spray the top pulley so it looks nice and matches the bottom and he has one nice shiny engine! :D

Then its a good clean ready for the Sunday (as long as the weathers nice!)

1958 Harry
8th December 2007, 18:43
I am pleased to say - the new dizzy is working a treat! :D Flat spot is gone, just need to double check the timing and he's got his Zoom Zoom back :D

Shamrockez
8th December 2007, 19:31
Yay! :D

1958 Harry
8th December 2007, 22:42
Yep :D

Just need to work out why I cant get his idle speed below 1200rpm then I can set the timing properly
I took him round the block too, it was the first time I've driven him since fitting Semaphores back on him, when I first went to indicate I wondered what te clunk was then remembered it was the semis

All thats left to do next weekend is he's having a nice shiny black VW pulley fitted in place of the nasty EMPI pulley, I'll paint the top pulley as well to make it look nice then its a good clean and he's all ready for Sunday! Lets just hope the weather is good!

Shamrockez
8th December 2007, 22:45
have you adjusted the position of the dizzy?

1958 Harry
8th December 2007, 22:50
Yep, I used a timing gun and Tach/Dwell metre, the dwell is 47.6degrees, it should be 50degrees plus or minus 2 degrees so 47.6 I figure is close enough, and I attempted to set the timing correctly to 7.5BTDC I got it close to that but setting the idle speed as low as it could go meant the engine was hunting a bit so it was difficult to get the timing spot on, he seems to be running OK and nice and cool and was super zoomy out on the road. There is an item somewhere on VZi about not being able to get the idle speed low enough with some carbs so I'm gonna find that and see what it says.

He see's Squirrel next Sat for the pulley change so I'll see what he reckons :)

I've also got the bit of Tinware that was missing on the front of the Cylinder heads, I had to hammer it flatter to get it to fit (repro crap) but afaik he has all his tinware now :D

Shamrockez
8th December 2007, 22:52
He got Joey running perfectly after we'd had some similar problems to you so I'm sure he can :)

1958 Harry
8th December 2007, 22:56
Well he seems to be running perfectly now (after I upped the idle back to 1500rpm  ) he was originally idling at 2000 rpm!

Either the Tach metre is wrong or somethings slightly amiss with the idle circuit

1958 Harry

4th March 2008, 23:03
Well I'm finally getting somewhere with painting Harrys seats!

The bar for the rear seat is all repainted and fitted, with the under seat kick panels now fitted - I found some red vinyl similar to Harrys seats, its not a perfect match but good enough I think :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/04032008011.jpg

The front seats are finally primed so I'll be giving them their paint tomorrow and hopefully refitting his seats on the weekend :D

Next is hopefully my new carb should arrive under warranty from GSF so I'll fit that, then its off to Mark again for his final bit of bodywork, some new whitewall flaps then its a bloody good clean and polish (inside & out!) and he should be ready for CTTP, and ACTUALLY make it there this year :D :D :D

I also found out today his oil leak is the sump plate and not the flywheel seal as I first thought (PHEW!!!) so nothing at all to worry about :D

Yep, I can't wait to finally get him out again!

I did the kick panels and they turned out surprisingly OK considering I did them  because Harry has underlay they were a very tight fit tho!

Gemmas brother also gave me a custom speaker box that fits behind the rear seats, so with the rear seat in place you can't see it, so if I've got some money I might buy a cheap IPOD CD player, a 6V to 12V step up transformer and fit a decent sound system in Harry, and it'll be completely invisible unless you know where to look :D

After many problems with the paint reacting, much swearing and cussing, I have finally got Harrys seat frames repainted in (almost) the right colour. Looks much better than the wrong black they were before :D

Then tonight I dropped Harry off at Mark (V Dub Resto) for his final bodywork which he should hopefully be done in time for CTTP :D

Also - anyone know a good way to get spray paint off vinyl, I chipped bit when putting them back together so dusted the chip with spray paint and got some on the vinyl seats :( Any ideas of how to best remove it are much appreciated!

Heres some pics - he isn't normally this filthy inside, but with the bodywork etc being done its not worth cleaning him until he's finished :)

A bit of an update on Harry, myself and Jim sorted his rear brakes, turned out the rear brake flexi lines were nackered! They were Genuine VW ones so goodness knows how old they were!!! Anyway the rear brakes and handbrake now work properly. We also took out his engine, replaced the rear gearbox oil seal again as I'd made a hash of fitting it last time, this time its seems to have gone in perfectly so thats good :D, we've also hopefully sorted out the air leak, I'll know once I get the new gasket fitted which I'll be doing tomorrow :D

Then late July he is off to Mark to have both his rear wings, rear valance, engine lid, bonnet and front valance re-painted, hopefully if I have the cash as well Dent magic or whoever will be removing the small dinks in his doors, he should be pretty much perfect then :D

I'm hoping this is all done in time for Volksfest Wales, otherwise we'll be going in Gems bug :D

I 'think' i've sorted the air leak Jim, I wont know for sure until I drive him tomorrow :D

1958 Harry
1st July 2008, 00:22
Nope air leak not sorted, I think I need to tighten the bolts down more:(

On the plus side Dent Magic removed the depression dinks in Harrys doors so they are nice and straight now :D just need to re-fit the door cards.

Next is finally get that bloody air leak and clutch judder sorted then its off to Mark to have his rear end, bonnet and front valance resprayed :D

I was hoping to have all this done in time for Volksfest Wales but with Gems bug the work takes precedence on that now so Hatty will be going in for her bodywork first, so I reckon Harrys next outing will probably be the Bristol Xmas Cruise :(

Shamrockez
1st July 2008, 07:27
Make sure the bolts on the inlet manifold are tight - but not too tight as I snapped on on Bella! That's why Joey wasn't running on all 4 cylinders, cos he had an air leak.

1958 Harry
18th March 2009, 09:27
Thought I'd best post a Harry update!

Since my post above he's been languishing in the garage having bits stolen off his engine for Gems bug (which is now sold). So in the interim I got a call from Alan from DBS, Ultra VW want to feature him!!! :D So I thought I’d best get my ass in gear and get him sorted! So a brand new 30Pict3 Carb was ordered as was a brand new Dizzy (both had been ‘donated’ to Hatty), also ordered was a Helicoil kit to repair the stud that kept pulling out of the head causing the air leak and misfiring, he also had a clutch judder which I think I traced to a knackered Flywheel Gland Nut bearing so a new one of them was ordered also, he’s also had a problem with the fanbelt pulley alignments so I ordered a shim kit to sort the alignment and he had a crappy ugly aftermarket bottom pulley fitted so I decided to replace that with a stock item as well.

Soooo myself, Gem and Jim pulled Harrys engine and set to work replacing/repairing the various bits, which took AGES lol! Whilst the engine was out myself and Jim also fitted a Thermostat and flaps as they were missing also. Anyway it took ages mainly because it was too cold, wet, I was helping Mark or fixing Gems brothers car, or I was too busy. Anyway we finally got his engine back in and after a couple of weeks of him not starting I realised I’d installed the dizzy 180degrees out, DOH! Anyway I finally got him running a couple of weeks ago and what a great sound that was!!! And he seems to run lovely now, flat spot/popping appears to have gone and he revs cleanly.
<O:p
Now he’s running he goes into Marks (VDub Resto) Saturday to have his bonnet repainted, front valance repainted (a rust bubble has surfaced! Grrr!) rear valance repainted, both wings repainted and the rear light housings, Marks also MOT’ing him for me as it expired last November and because he wasn’t running I didn’t get him done!
<O:p
Soooo all being well he will be at CTTP this year (that’s when Marks aiming to get him ready by) ready for his photo shoot and 5 minutes of fame!
<O:p
I’ll post up some pics of the various works and when he’s done, I’ll also make sure you all know when he’s featured :D

Also in the meantime I've changed jobs, had to give the company Fiat 500 back and bought myself a NB - Molly - to use as my daily, and hopefully both Molly and Harry will be at Bristol Volksfest this year :D Also as well as the above Mark is painting my steels up for Molly, decided to go down the retro route with her :D

Next small bit - the rear wings! The flange where they bolt on basically disintegrated in Marks hands, which made them all floppy and on the verge of folding in half!!! He reckoned all the underseal on the car stopped them getting any worse as there was no sign of moisture in the metal!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/DSC00168.jpg

So he has saved them and welded a new flange on (still to be ground back etc there), which is great as being original wings they are deffo worth saving!!! (both wings have needed this treatment)

As you can see this is some serious craftsmanship, and I'm really glad he could save them, as trying to source NOS wings is VERY expensive and nigh on impossible!!!

He reckons he'll have Harry all done and painted by the end of the week, then its MOT time :D

crikey! He never showed any signs of rust like that! Just goes to show what can be hidden on Bugs! Still, he's in the right hands to be mended :D

Yep no sign on either rear wing, and all I had on the front valance was a tiny rust bubble!

I just had the wings done to tidy em up, same with the valance! I'm glad I did now! Marks managed to save all 4 wings now as they'd all gone like that!

At least now he wont have any rust, and the bit thats bugged me for ages in his wheel well along that edge I know what it is now!

yeah always best to stop the rust before it gets too bad!

Perhaps I could also take up that challenge too. My 1302 has been sat in the same spot for three years so it's almost welded to the ground

Harry looks excellent Lukey! I am seriously considering getting in contact with Mark to sort my bug out and get all her welding done - I need to get out and about driving her again! And I am not up for letting some cowboy try to rip me off again - had enough of that drama!

(ooh sorry - this is Vic!)

LOL! Yep Mark cant take any more work on until July/August time afaik. Give him a call tho, tell him what needs doing and he'll be able to give a rough cost (I can have a looksie for you if you aren't sure wht needs doing :) ). Just remember once you start cutting rot out you WILL find more, so always budget a bit more than you are quoted, that way you have some in reserve IF you find more work needs doing :)

Jims going to give Mark a hand over the summer :)
