I have seen a 52 plate 1.4 Lupo for about 4k but I didn't want to spend that much.
Is the 1.4 any good?

lupos are cool ,i had a yellow one as a runaround my mrs said leave it alone it's just a little runabout ;D ;D ;D,i came home in it one day i'd been at my mates garage all day fitted the 14" alloys, dropped it 40mm,and fitted 2x 12"jbl subs ,2xamps,6x9 on a custom made shelf, panel filter and seat cupra R badges on sides and GT badge on rear ;D ;D she went mental ;D ;D,but she did like it when she calmed down.have a look on www.pimpincab.piczo.com as i've put a couple of pics on there, you wont go wrong with a lupo they hold there money and drive like a go-kart if ya drop it ;)

1.4s is a quick little car but you wont get many for less than 4k.
1.4tdi is also quick and top gear did a road test and got 70 mpg :o
my lupo was only a 1.0 but it went well when you got it going and went around corners like it was on rails :D

An early Smart 4-2, you can get RHD's for about 3-4K now, all come with leccy windows, abs, esp, central locking. Just get the lowest mileage you can. Beware tho if you do go for one the 600CC ones had a habit of cracking their manifolds which means a new turbo! They do have £40 a year tax tho, and very cheap insurance! ;)

Think we may be selling our Smart 4-2. Under 30k, full history, upgraded Smart alloys. It's the 61hp higher spec engine.

Mk1 Mazda MX5 - cheap to buy, reliable, 40 mpg and low insurance, proper sports car too, rear wheel drive and great fun - convertible too :) Only thing off your list is low tax as it is on engine size and they are in the higher bracket. Still £2-3k for a decent one so lots of money to spend on tax :)
If you have lots of money to spend, Audi A2 TDi. Just bought one for my Mum (her money!!) £10kish, £50 a year tax, 70 mpg, low insurance, 5 doors and damm right bloody cool - future 'cassic' potential, Audi will never build another car with that much technology for that sort of price, same build as an A8 without the £60k price tag.
Other than those I would agree on a 4-2 Smart, great little cars but dubious handling if you like rapid driving on B roads, fine on M'ways and around town though :)

With the uprated alloys handling isn't an issue unless pounding it in the wet. I can chuck ours around corners no worries.

Take your point, but I live on the west coast of Wales, wet windy roads are our speciality!!! MX5 can be exciting enough when it is wet, RWD is fun though :o

Get the engine remapped (£150) and it'll delimit it, give it 80BHP, and absolutely fly! ;) ;D

Agreed it's got to be a Lupo, I have kids so the mx5 wouldn't be an option
