Ok with 2007 now approaching I am putting the final information together for a possible New Beetle outing to visit Wolfsburg.

We would probably head out in June (most likely the first weekend after everyone has been paid) for this as the weather will be a bit better by then and the plans would be for everyone to take their bugs over, drive down to the factory have a tour, do some photographs and then convoy back - if anyone wants to trek further afield then thats up to them - we plan on this being a few days touring i.e. out Friday back Monday.

The plan would be to have a central meeting point i.e. Birmingham and then convoy picking up others on route ready to catch the crossing at Folkestone into Cologne.

There is the possibility of combining this trip with The OldTimers meeting in Bad Camberg - for those of you that don't know this show is a great display of the oldest and rarest VWs in Europe!

I hope to have an itinerary put together this week which would show the suggested route as well as accommodation and rough costs for the museum.

I think this would be an amazing trip and take this club to a new level. *Can you imagine how cool it would look to have 10 - 20 New Beetles driving into Wolfsburg!!

If you are seriously interested in taking part in this can you please post your name below. *There will be a deposit to be paid up front (to cover the ferry or train ticket cost) which will secure your place and be non-refundable.

Any questions feel free to ask below.

Thanks
Charlie & Chris

Shamrockez
13th December 2006, 14:02
Ooh it's always worth having AA/RAC etc cover just in case - you never know if you might get a blow out on the motorway and you don't really want to be changing a wheel on the slip road, especially if you have a little one in the back.

I must see if my RAC covers me abroad.. I shall ask my Dad!

Bloody hell you planning on drinking as much beer as ya Bug will Petrol!!!! surely won't need that much thats the best part of a luxury holiday for a week at least somewhere hot!!

From Charlies calculations you'll need about £100 for train and Wolfsburg then accom at 30-50 per night depending where we stay, petrol money - haven't got a clue how much, then whatever else you'll drink or buy....remember if your gonna find someone to jump in with ya you'll be splitting it. although if ya got £800 to spare feel free to bring it and we'll have a round on you!!

mind you saying all that if you're on your own then you might not be far wrong!!!

If we just go to Wolfsburg and back it'll be about 1000 miles.. so I recon that'll be £100-120ish on diesel for Robbie - depending on what speed we do/any diversions/traffic etc. Feel free to double that for some petrols! And then half it if there's 2 of you. Add a bit more contingency for if we go to other towns, Bad Camberg, get lost etc.

Our 2ltr petrol does about 300 miles to 1 tank at a cost of £40 to fill up, so a 1200 mile journey = 4 tanks of fuel at a cost over here of about £160.

You still with me at the back?? :)

As we get royally rapped over here for tax, fuel should be a lot cheaper over the pond.
So I plan to get over to France with about 1/4 of a tank left then fill up over there, and then just before we get on the train to come home, fill up again thus getting the most amount of miles on the cheap fuel.

Does this make sense to you guys?

By the way I do 60 miles a day, 30 miles up and down the A3 at about 80 - 95 mph and 30 miles cross country usually accelerating reasonably hard, just in case anybody had different range for their tank.

Fill up here before we get on the boat petrol IS cheaper the other side of the pond.

This will be the route

I have found a Holiday Inn in Wolfsburg Centre which appears reasonable for what we need - £36 a night inc B&B. I can look at cheaper alternatives also if people wish. If people want luxury then there's the Hyatt Regency ;D

This hotel is close to the main roads in case we want to go out and about and also close to the attractions if we dont all want to pile in the bugs

Details are here http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/925/en/hd/wsbge?ias=y

Wolfsburg Museum

If you want to read up on whats there then visit

http://www.autostadt.de/info/cda/main/0,3606,2~1,00.html

A two day ticket if 20 or more of us go is just 14 Euros!!!

When the Civic Type-R forum did a Euro Tour (7 countries 7 days last year) even with their thirsty motors no one spent more than a few hundred quid. I think spending £800 is way excessive. Beer is cheaper over there - the vast majority of it is brewed over there :)

"For your Channel Tunnel fares (before any discount) you can look here:-

http://www.eurotunnel1.com/direct/booking/fare.asp

Approx £54 each way aiming for a lunchtime departure from Folkestone to allow everyone time to get down there.

Fill up here before we get on the boat petrol IS cheaper the other side of the pond. "

we going boat or train as one part is making out train next part is saying boat ;)

I imagine it will be split.

Plus we gotta stop a load of times for the petrols to refuel ;D ;D :-X

bug78
16th December 2006, 01:07
Our 2ltr petrol does about 300 miles to 1 tank at a cost of £40 to fill up, so a 1200 mile journey = 4 tanks of fuel at a cost over here of about £160.

You still with me at the back?? :)

As we get royally rapped over here for tax, fuel should be a lot cheaper over the pond.
So I plan to get over to France with about 1/4 of a tank left then fill up over there, and then just before we get on the train to come home, fill up again thus getting the most amount of miles on the cheap fuel.

Does this make sense to you guys?

By the way I do 60 miles a day, 30 miles up and down the A3 at about 80 - 95 mph and 30 miles cross country usually accelerating reasonably hard, just in case anybody had different range for their tank.

cool but you forgot to say ill be taking a trailer with a mini tank on the back to fill up and bring back over :) .......300miles cool i get 100 on 25 lol

Its not just cos its abroad, its just common sense, driving for 14 hours in one go is dangerous, fatigue creeps in and people end up loosing concentration.

I have done roadtrips all accross Europe before, and im telling you, no way can you drive to Germany, especially deep into Germany in one go. Unless your mad, or stupid, or both! lol

Ok Essen hotel has come back with the following:-

"15-16 double rooms at EUR 72,- per room (£48) / Night incl. breakfast from 22.06.-23.06.07 and from 24.06.-25.06.07.

A cancellation free of charge is possible until 04 weeks prior to arrival. We request a 100% deposit until 03 weeks prior to arrival."

From that I gather I can book the rooms NOW at no charge and we simply need to pay the £48 3 weeks before we get out there - does everyone agree???

If so shall I reserve the rooms - do we know if ANYONE else is going on this trip.

Lucy Vaughan & Steve Fletcher - non smoking ta :)

Actually you should make that Lucinda Vaughan and Stephen Fletcher as that's what our passports say.

Speaking of which is everyone up to date with theirs?

5th January 2007, 10:23
I don't know if there's a minimum time it needs to have left for them to let you over? Mine's got till 2011 so I should be ok lol. I dunno if somethinng to do with time you're allowed to stay in a country without a visa comes into it and your passport has to cover the whole of that time? Best thing to do is ring the passport office and see what they say.

Nothing worse than not being able to go on holiday cos of your passport - happened to my Mum when we were little, so we were left in France for a few days with just my Dad - who on arrival to the hotel managed to loose all 3 of us in the lifts and hotel reception ;D

i think for a European trip you have to have 6 month validity left from the date of travel for worldwide its a year......as you only have a year left now it would prolly be a good idea to get a new one or check on the passport office website...

BarneyBug

just had a sneaky peak (am at work bored) This is what it says :

Why do I need a specified validity period remaining on my passport to travel to certain countries?

Some overseas countries have an immigration requirement for a passport to remain valid for a minimum period after entry to that country. The holding of a British passport does not exempt the holder from complying with these requirements. If your passport is in its final year of validity, you are advised to check the requirements of the country of destination before you make your final travel plans. Any questions should be addressed to their consulate or embassy. Your travel agent willl also be able to give you advice on this matter.

You do not have to wait until your passport expires before you renew it. If you renew your passport before it expires, any unexpired period of validity rounded up to the nearest whole month (minimum of one month, maximum of nine months) will be added to your new passport. This period is calculated from the point at which your new passport is authorised for issue, not from date of application. You therefore need to apply at least six weeks before your passport expires to get this benefit

Ok with the 13 people travelling the best fare we can get on the Channel Tunnel is:-

Departing 22nd June - Folkestone to Calais
10.00 am departure - £54

Returning 25th June - Calais to Folkestone
8.00 - 9.00 am departure - £55
12.00 - 1.00 pm departure - £54

Is everyone ok with this? I need personal cheques please made payable to C Everiss for the amounts above by 30th/31st January 2007. If you want to pay by PayPal please use address ceveriss@hotmail.com

Now.......do people want to go to the Old Timers VW Meeting at Bad Camberg rather than stopping at Essen. So we would drive from Calais to Bad Camberg - visit the show - over night in Bad Camberg - drive to Wolfsburg - visit VW Museum - drive back to Bad Camberg - depart Calais to UK

If so its about 1hr further on the route map but a show well worth seeing at it showcases some of the very rarest VW models.

I'd suggest that anyone wanting to pay via paypal over cheque adds the percentage paypal removes as a fee so that Charlie doesn't end up out of pocket for being nice :)

BarneyBug

OK as i'm totally lost with this now, how much do I need to pay you? What is this paying for?

What are you booking for us and what do we need to book.

For the dummies like me is there any chance you could start a new thread with all the details/costs summarised, what we need to do/book etc so theres no confusion as the 15 page thread isn't very clear (well to me anyway!)

Thanky-ta! ;D
