Johnny honey,
Does a remap improve fuel consumption or does it encourage the engine to use more?

Ok well it does depend entirely on the remap, from some work I've done for a firm importing cars into Taiwan you can achieve better fuel consumption, as you can see below the varying fuel consumption achieved on an Audi S4 4.2 earlier this year with mapping changes alone.
EA8C-E-NE2MOD
Fuel used for FTP-75 cycle: 2.425kg / Fuel used for HWFET cycle: 1.210kg
Final: 6.941691km/liter
BE9B-E-NE3MOD
Fuel used for FTP-75 cycle: 2.120kg / Fuel used for HWFET cycle: 1.160kg
Final: 7.712972km/liter
F6BB-E-NE4MOD
Fuel used for FTP-75 cycle: 2.120kg / Fuel used for HWFET cycle: 1.165kg
Final: 7.702179km/liter
866F-E-ST2MOD
Fuel used for FTP-75 cycle: 1.960kg / Fuel used for HWFET cycle: 1.155kg
Final: 8.138936km/liter
AD5F-E-ST3MOD
Fuel used for FTP-75 cycle: 1.980kg / Fuel used for HWFET cycle: 1.140kg
Final: 8.120402km/liter
The mapping that passed it through the test was the equivilent of a performance map, some engines don't achieve the low figures needed over there with mapping like this and that's when you have to go down other routes. But in general particularly with turbo engines using the turbo a tiny bit more does improve efficiency overall. To compare economy though you have to look at like for like usage. You see the thing is if you have more power and you use it all then power comes from burning fuel and more power generally means more fuel, so with Mark for instance he'll maybe do 1-2mpg less than usual, the non animals of us will see an improvement :)

So basically, when I use it the fuel consumption improves (more miles per gallon/litre) and when t'other drives it the fuel tank is sucked dry!
;D ;D ;D

That would explain the fact that the car only did 200 miles on a tank of fuel last weekend. Dunno what he does but it always goes down faster when he drives! ::) :-?

In technical terms throttle angle position/driver request is at 100% ;)

Or I just am more caring of my little syd than he is...
hmmm might take him off the insurance. That'll increase the fuel consumption! ;D

Before the remap i'd put £10 of Shell super unleaded. Would last a day
Now i have found that it lasts a day and a half since the remap and i floor it everywhere :-/

You only need 95 RON (normal unleaded) in a 1.6 engine. 98 RON is better on turbos or V5.
Of course I may be wrong and stand ready to be corrected.

Stand corrected then :)
Adaption due to higher octane will allow slightly more timing which in turn does give more power :)

Okey dokey
Just how much difference would you get from 95 and 98 ron compared to the cost of fuel?

3 ron ;D
go try tesco 101 8-)

Actually the economy improvement in s****y petrol offsets the cost! Try it and you'll see :smilie_like:

Hey John!
The fuel consumption thing has me stumped! I filled up on Saturday after we left your place, and I've just finished the tank this morning. I've been *ahem* "enjoying" the remap this week, so I've been driving the Bug probably a bit harder than normal, so I was expecting a dip in the MPG which would improve once I'd started to drive more normally again.
However, to my disbelief, the car has actually done about 40 miles MORE than it normally does on a tank of diesel!
So, either Tesco's in Rugby are selling magic fuel, or you've just been awarded yet another gold star for providing a fantastic remap!
I'll try to get a piece put together for your website after the weekend.
yours,
Rich, Sam and one happy orange Beetle

I can vouch for this; I get better MPG on the V5 using 98 ron and the extra cost works about the same as using normal unleaded. I recon I about break even on the avarage cost, it may even be slightly in my favour cost wise.
you do get the bonus of a slightly more responsive drive too...

Ok the Germany trip was the first time I'd done tank to tank on Robbie - and I got an extra 100 miles more out of a tank than I did before he was remapped  and I got 122mph on the autobahn before I had to brake for bumps in the road (they hurt!), and he still had more left in him to go faster.
If you've got a TDi - go get it remapped by John - it'll pay for itself in no time and you get a smoother, faster car in the process! No brainer!

Jon do you do site visits to Ireland, come over, bring your laptop and we can get pissed! - Otherwise see you later in the year:laughing:

I keep trying to tell every 95 RON user to use 98 and explaining this but they don't believe me!
