I've found 4 classic bugs that I like and might go and see, but I want peeps opinions and if they know anything about any of these cars on here?

Also whats a checklist of what I should look for?

This ones my fave:
http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=322537

Also my joint fave - if its still available - could need a new gearbox tho
http://restowagenuk.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6920

and these are my joint 2nd fave :)
http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=326594

The trouble with this one is the dude wants to swap it for something, not sell it?! :-?

they are all gorgeous not too keen on the 3rd ones colour :-? the last one is to die for i want it!! make him take money for it, its lush!

Purely from a non mechanical, asthetic point of veiw of course!!

The first for me dont do it , the grey one would look the dogs with abit of money spent on it -gearbox , rims, lowering etc etc ::) but i bet you could spend another 2k on it easy so thats a no no, the 3rd in gulf blue is could be very cool but at that price i think it's too dear , it would have to be the last one for me 8-) 8-) 8-) the guy says it needs work so i bet the pictures are from when it was first built but it looks like its had shiz loads spent on it and the look of it is very cali 8-) 8-) so that would be my pick and the guy says he wants to swap but i dont know anybody that if you put ££££££££££ in front of people they wont take it :)

Second one Luke....the grey one. Its gorgeous!!! and would so suit you!!!

I'd go for any of those bar the first one, I don't like that one at all but then it's always down to personal taste! If the last guy is looking to swap for an early bay or a splitscreen, then chances are he would want muchos dinero for it, but that's definitely the nicest. The blue B reg just needs a little TLC and some bumpers! The interior on that is gorgeous.
Points to look out for are all the usual suspsects, bottoms of doors, heater channels, floorpan (under rear seat battery trays) roof gutters, round the windows, A pillars, under the spare wheel in the wheel well etc. I'd say that's all more important than the engine, seeing as you can pick up a new engine for next to bugger all these days! Just the basic poke around underneath with something, if you hear a crunch and get showered in brown debiris.... RUN AWAY!!!!
Good luck :)

Cheers,

I'm ideally after one that is pretty much sorted body wise (ie decent paint, little/no rust, and 100% solid) but mechanically i'm not overly bothered if its got 1 or 2 things wrong. I'm ideally after a resto-cal/cal look bug. but I like the top one as its kinda modern retro, but after talking to the guy he says there is slight shrinkage of the filler in the roof gutters but is otherwise perfect, after talking with Luce this doesn't sound like a good sign???

Just found this one as well, i've emailed them for more info.

Needs bumpers, and I don't like those wheels, but looks tidy from the pics.

My favourite has to be the gun metal grey one, its gorgeous *;) And looks in great condition inside and out and with a little work here and there it would be top notch which i don't think would cost all that much, if it was me choosing i think i would go for that one. I also like the last one you posted too, the beige one, it looks a tidy car and would look fantastic again with a little work here and there *:-/

It depends what you want from the car and how much your willing to pay and what you are prepared to do yourself. We wanted a small project and ours is sound mechanically and the paint jobs ok (just not upto our standard) she just basically needs a new interior as she is totally original and is now starting to wear. When we was looking for a bug we searched all over for the bug for us, it took us a few months to find one and we ended up travelling to North Wales to look at her but she was worth it. We went round her with a fine tooth comb, we checked all the bodywork and then the bloke jacked her up so we could see underneath and check the floor plans and check she was all ok, we checked all the usual places such as in the spare wheel well, round the windows, under the rear seat, the heater channels, round the doors etc.... And then the test drive sold it for us as she was perfect *:)

I'll have up to £4k to spend, like I said i'd like one that was mint body/interior wise (dont have the time to be resto'ing stuff!) but i'm not overly bothered if it has a few mechanical issues as I don't mind getting my hands dirty sorting those!

I like the grey one too, could be a proper cal look bug, and I like the wheels it has too!

I love the wheels on the grey one too they really set it off and it could easily be made into a proper cal looker ;)

4k could buy you a really nice sound bug it just depends on how long you are prepared to wait and waiting for the right one to come along. There are a lot out there at the moment but you have to sieve through some of them to find the gems :)

You know I wouldn't touch the first one Luke and the reasons behind that.

My money would go on the 2nd one - I love it.

I like the 3rd too - with bumpers a roof rack and different wheels and the arse coming down it would be spot on.

The 4th would be £5-6k in cash i recon.

The 5th I like - I'd put that 3rd I think after the grey then blue.

'ello :D

Paul with the green 65 is part of our club... he is willing to sell it for money!

He jus put swop as ideally he's after something to sleep in like a split/bay but he'd take the right cash!

It's an awesome car really ... been pictured (not featured) a few times in Ultra and Volksworld!

He's coming out to play in it on Sunday and it'll have 12 months mot etc on it as of Friday!

Bourney
4th January 2007, 17:27
first one is errmmmm not nice (to me anyway)!! nice and clean & tidy but i cant stand modern colours / seats etc in an old bug..just not right and really devalues the car in my opinion and will always look tattier more quickly and cant carry scars as well.

2nd one is REALLY to my taste..id have something of that ilk tomorrow if i had the mechanical knowledge & a decent garage to keep it that way.

3rd..hmm not sure about that one..i like it in one way but hmm not sure

4th one...really like that but wouldnt have that colour as a daily driver but only cos you showed us the grey one!! you know which one to have Luke :)

I agree ... not really my cup of tea!!

I thought u were after a resto cal bug?

1st one - I'd say thats more a modified/German looker? Smoothed out dash .... dechromed.... late model car made to look early with early panels... it's a 74 so not tax exempt ... and to be honest custom bugs are pretty hard to sell on as they are very individual taste ... u jus have to be lucky that someone with similar taste just happens to come along at the right time!

2nd one - Richard Oakley is very lucky with his cars - always manages to find 1 owner minters! lucky man!

3rd - more a cal looker ...not enough shiny bits for my liking ;D

4th - see above .... reminds me of Kermit :D i love it but i'm biased with regards to resto cal and shiny things!

... at the end of the day tho everything is down to personal taste ... if u love it and love drivin it and you'll still love it when it spews out oil and has a coughing fit every now and then - then go for it!

What I have to say with the first Bug is this - Luke, we all know you're a perfectionist! And you like things to be correct and all that. I can't help thinking that if you do go for the first Bug, you'll end up selling it to get a 'real' pre 67 and a resto cal.

Sugar - the plan with the cal look one was to resto it up! :D

sugarbug
4th January 2007, 17:53
Sugar - the plan with the cal look one was to resto it up! :D

I'd worry with that theory ... as you'll end up spending more than u plan to when u start buying one shiny bit after another ... wheels.... low profile tyres... dropped spindles... narrowed beam ... mirrors .. chrome for runnin boards... bumpers etc etc it all adds up!

If you're a perfectionist you'll only want the best chrome bits and stainless steel bumpers etc at a pretty penny ... and then once you've bought the car for £3.5k you'll end up spendin another £2k plus so spendin more than you originally planned for!

Shamrockez
4th January 2007, 18:03
;D true! But the basics of a resto cal can be achiveved for not too much - then you can add the better shiny bits on over the years :)

I think patience is the key.... People at the moment are more likely to be dealing with getting back to work and waiting for their jan pay check to see where their finances stand. Judging by the amount of people out in southampton christmas shopping, and then the racks and racks pilled up at the front of the stores with Jan sale stuck on them, I'd be suppriesd if there would be a huge amount of people wanting to part with the big sum of money.

Seems to me that with cars you either wait and bide your time and get close to what you want, or you take the hit and get the cash.

I'd imagine if the V5 was off the road and stored safely that you could just wait and look and get all your ideas and options in check and then when you get the money you will be ready to go. Thats what I'm doing for my next big spend. I've learnt a hell of a lot about what I want by being a lurker and checking things out. If the pre fun before the fun that makes the real fun better.... If you get what I mean.

I agree there, ours is really really low and we avoid them when we can but its all about hitting them right or not at all in our case ;D

lol I have to say I'm the same!!

I have to think about the journey before I go out in mine as some speed humps it won't get over!

I can only just get my foot under my car :o I'll have to post a pic!!

Mine grounds out on some humps and then balances like a see saw! I have to take them at an angle or not take them at all! I have smart car tyres all round but gonna replace the rears with slightly bigger tyres to give me a bit more clearance!

My other half was driving my old bug home for me yesterday and I was followin him in the newbie ... my old bug was grindin the dual carridgeway and throwing out sparks :o

AIR RIDE next for me!! :D 8-)

good luck with ures Shamrockez ... before and after pics needed!

Lots of pics will be taken :D

Currently my Newbie is lower than her:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a309/Shamrockez7/Other/ff4ec06c.jpg

But then again she doesn't have any fuel in her, any engine or interior! So she will go a fair bit lower anyway when they're all in, plus dropped spindles and she'll be sitting on the floor :D

My friend Tom (Tomarse on VZi) fitted DS to his Bug at mine and with the smart car tyres on it was literally on the floor and sparked along at very low speeds so he had to put some bigger tyres on just to get home :o

Ure newbie is very low indeed :o I couldn't cope if my newbie was that low... then i'd have 2 cars ant not be able to get anywhere!! I bet u cringe at potholes! :o

We can just about get a toe under ours and we have smart car tyres fitted too ;) We've only had one accident so far concerning road humps etc... And that was a metal stake outside a local castle carpark which she should have cleared as was snail sized :o Adam my other half thought we had enough clearence and we didn't and it knocked the anti roll bar, it gave the workers there some amusement watching us fix it back on so we could get home, cost us a new anti roll bar though so lesson learnt ::)

Lol he's not too bad really. He scrapes on a fair bit but I'venot got him stuck yet. I did go and see one of my old ponies at Christmas tho, and where he lives there is a long track and then right at the end there is a thin but steep speed bump. I wasn't too sure about going over it, but did anyway ::) and he scraped all the way along it - it didn't make very nice noises and you could feel that something in his middle was touching the bump. Getting out was worse cos I took it really slow - and the bump was steep and it was slippy so I couldn't get him to go over it :-[ his wheels just slipped! So I had to take a run up, which wasn't fun!

He's better in the summer with his bigger wheels.

Ah, most people with low Bugs don't bother keeping them on cos once you get to a certain lowness the ARB doesn't actually help at all any more.

We didn't refit the one on our Split. Then again the beam is 2in narrowed and we can't find anywhere which sells 2in narrowed ARBs! And he's got some 155/50 Potenzas on now, so he's sitting quite low - just comes out the garage!

8-) but :o shamrockez , your bug is just silly low ;D . one of my old bugs failed the m.o.t cos it would go on the ramp ;D so i took my sub box out and spare and it went on just but then he failed it anyway cos it had no travel ::) do you have same probs ?

Shamrockez
6th January 2007, 12:06
With which?

Robbie goes on low ramps (just).

The Bug in the pic with the phone - he wound the adjusters up ;) and it has dropped spindles so the travel will almost like stock.

My oldie - she's never been on a ramp with me so I have no idea. I'll just look for someone with a pit opposed to a ramp if needed ;) and wind the adjusters up. I think I'm gonna have to put her back end up a bit cos she's down 3 splines at the mo :o

Same with the Split.

I'd sell the plates on it, even though I'll get shot for saying that, I'm not precious about original registrations, they don't add any value to the car imho, it's just sentimental claptrap, ;D Return spring thingie looks a bit shagged on the brake pedal on the blue bug, that's the only thing I can see wrong with it, lol

Hold on a mo though, shouldn't a '63 have the slim indicators on top of the wings? If so, then it must have been played with and therefore have either new or resprayed wings.... consequently I would deduct that it's not original paint and not 'original state' as described! :-/
What do you reckon Lucy? You're the oracle on this!

Incidentally I realise none of the above really matters, it's still a lovely bug :)

Shamrockez
7th January 2007, 17:53
It would have had indicators on the wings - if they were the slim ones or not would depend on the month made as they changed in 63 I think.

However the decklid is deffo wrong as it's one for a 65-66.

Lol our Aussie Bay is like that - he's ever so quiet! Was a big change coming from our British Bay who is sooooooooo loud when you're accelerating - he's pretty quiet when you're idling tho so again you have to check you've not stalled cos he went from loud to very quiet lol.
