Heres a few pics of Harry, my 1958 1200 bug that I just took :D, sorry for the crappy quality/angles, but it was soo bloody cold couldn't be arsed to faff! *I'll get some better ones once he's polished and all his new brightwork is fitted :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/HPIM0868.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/HPIM0866.jpg

He needs a good polish, and he has new US Spec Stainless Steel bumpers, and Flat 4 Wing Mirrors arriving tomorrow, he's having a full service, brake check/overhaul as necessary, and a new exhaust with stainless steel tailpipes fitted tomorrow. *I'm also getting new tyres fitted as he's still on Cross Plys! :o

Just waiting for the colour swatches to arive from VW Heritage to choose the right vinyl for his new doorcards (he currently doesn't have any!) to match his new TMI seats (already in him) and i'm waiting for a time scale for some resto quality proper fitting carpets, in charcoal, to complete his interior, and some decent resto quality hubcaps, not the Mexican crap! :D

Also does anyone know how to get rust spots off other chrome trim bits?

He's so pretty! *I love driving him!

those brillo pad things work really well at getting rust off chrome - but... they make it worse for the next time :( But great if you just wanna make him look shiny before replacing the part. If you wanna keep them, try autosol.

to keep the rust off them a coat of oil smothered over them helps :)

He is!

Oh Vickie, i'll be swapping the bumpers Thursday/Friday, you are welcome to have his old ones any time this weekend! :)

Cool, i've got some Autosol, the indicators where the semaphores used to be is pitted on one side only so I wanna polish it up :D

Yay yay yay - Luke you are fab!!! I owe you big time (with monies/pizza/alcohol!) *;D

Hopefully I'll have Petal back by then - it's been ages!!

There's an OVC meet on the 28th (is that Sun?) with a big cruise down to Cheddar and then sunday lunch at a pub there. Me and Ian are going - might be fun for Harry's first meet? *:D

Oh and I wanna see Mr Robbie there too Luc!!! :)

billybug

congrachumalations! Let the cold wet weekends of working on a bug outside begin!! ;D

Let me know what the flat for wing mirrors are like now... I bought one last year and it broke straight away :( apparently they have changed their cupplier since so let me know what its like!

add to your shopping list for this week:

window rubbers with chrome inserts

and they will instantly change the look!

narrowed beam, dropped spindles etc are sure to follow ;)

before you buy any parts always check on here and see if any of us have em!

Cheers Sugar, Harry came with his chrome inserts, they just haven't been fitted, and you've gotta take the windows out to do it, so thats a future 'to do' ;)

I really like how he looks currently so i'm not gonna lower him, as he's still sooo original I don't wanna ruin that!

billybug
22nd January 2007, 18:38
OK, does anyone have any decent domed hubcaps? :)

Shamrockez
22nd January 2007, 18:39

did u reuse original ones? I've taken one of Bella's windows out cos her seals were typical aussie - cracked and dry! So I have to put new rubbers in and was hoping tore use the trim. Where can I get the tool from? Not done a Bug window before - only bus which don't have any trim!

billybug
22nd January 2007, 18:55
Harrys rubbers are all new so should be easy to do, I just don't fancy attempting it myself! I'll end up scratching something, or the windows leaking! ;D

Congrats on the bug, he is lovely :) Definately recommend autosol our bumpers were so bad when we got ours we thought they would need replacing but we spent a day on them polishing them and they have come up like brand new. If you love shopping for the bug then they might want to keep you away from the Dubfreeze show as you will come back armed with goodies ;)

I bought new trim... but i'm sure on one of our old bugs we reused the trim? not to hard as long as u haven't ben the lips!

Archibug - try Status if you want original parts as usually they can source them for u? Also on some chromed parts they offer u either american chrome (the better stuff) or brazilian chrome (the not so good)

22nd January 2007, 22:15
Very nice - thought you might find it better value than the other one ;)

One less aircooled in the village though :) (My family home is about 1/2 a mile from Spencer's house - and I was there Friday night and Sunday infact - I might have bumped into you!)

Have fun - remember credit cards have to be paid back!!

the fbi one reminded me of Bella - it was so solid. But it was a fair bit more money and the paint wasn't as good nor the interior.

Harry offered a lot more for the money tho. He had some good repairs done to the channel bottom plates so he's nice and solid plus he had a few extra bonus points over the fbi one.

billybug
22nd January 2007, 23:46
Yep he's very nice.

Once the garage has sorted his front brakes tomorrow he'll be good to go!

Cheers guys! :D

Oooh now that I like Luce! *Me and Gem were actually thinking of doing something similar! *Thats almost keeping him stock tho isn't it ;) (Although Harry will have US Spec bumpers and Albert Wing mirrors fitted ;) ;D )

Update on Harry, he's still at the garage, brakes are nearly done, new wheel bearing fitted, exhaust on and service almost complete, I think they just have to change the transmission fluid and thats it. *He'll be nice, ready and safe *to drive by lunchtime tomorrow! All I need to do is find out the model of Carb he has and order a new 6V auto choke for him as it doesn't work properly, which is interesting in the morning when he's cold! :D *The ace thing is they said he is totally solid underneath, just as Lucy said! *So cheers Luce! :D

His new bumpers, and lots of rubber gromets and door clips turned up today, gonna be fitting the bumpers Thursday, gonna order his carpets tomorrow and if the swatches ever turn up i'll be ordering his new door cards ASAP as they take 5 weeks to come from the states!

No probs :) I've bought a rotter before and I know it's not nice - I've learnt from it ;D

That Bug is very nice and not far off Harry - plus it's so easily reversable in a couple hours if you wanted to go back to stock.

depending on how often you are going to use it, it might be an idea to consider converting it to 12V maybe?

Also, if you are going to get an adjustable beam fitted, be careful to get one that is done well as it could break and cause a bad accident if the weld penetration isn't right.

Personally....i think its crying out for a trip up to Raceshack for a sheethot motor out back ;)

25th January 2007, 19:23
Well Harry now has all is shiny new bits fitted. Still need to order some new hubcaps but apart from that his chrome is looking pretty good! I've also ordered his new TMI doorcards and a TMI rear parcel shelf to complete the ensemble, and his new carpets and underlay should be here Monday ;D Finally got his door seals fitted, and now you have to give his doors a good slam as the rubbers need to find their position ;D

I'll post some piccies once we've cleaned and polished him tomorrow.

He also runs/drives 100% better now he's been serviced and his brakes overhauled, and he sounds like a bug now he has a new exhaust :D

Not gonna bother with a 12V conversion, he starts fine now, fired up perfectly this morning (started better than my Dads new Transit! :o )

I can't stop grinning when im driving him! I can see behind me now he has some wing mirrors which is useful too! :D

I'm liking how he is and as i've spent nearly £1500 on bits for him, i'm kinda out of money - for now ;D

I'm just looking forward to getting the new carpets, door cards and rear parcel shelf to make his interior all nice!

wow thats mad what a difference rims and suitable lowering does - bet its not lowered on the back tho :)

billybug
30th January 2007, 21:17
But I like him how he is :)

Whats wrong with actually keeping it stock? The car bar a couple of minor repairs to the floor pan, and some iffy home made carpets is pretty much as it left the factory, none of the quarters have been welded, it has its original floors, doors, bonnet and decklid, it still has the factory stickers on the door jambs and the factory insulation under the rear seats! Wouldn't it be nice to keep a car stock - for a change? Surely it will retain its value better as an original un-fiddled with car?

Don't get me wrong they look nice lowered, but I like the look of em as standard, and as mines nice and original IMHO it looks best kept that way :) I'm not even gonna bother getting a 12V conversion or a stereo fitted! (Unless I can find an original working 6V one ;) ;D )

Vickie
30th January 2007, 22:03

Thought i'd give a little update on where I am with Harry! :D

New carpets are fitted, still waiting on the door cards and parcel shelf, should be here next week sometime, also in that lot will be a shiny new set of hubcaps :D

He is now booked into Classy Campers, Weston, early/mid March (date TBC) to have the bottoms of his rear quarters cut out, welded andd resprayed as they are just starting to bubble, the crack on the edge of his bonnet welded/strengthened and sprayed and a repair to his heater channel internally - then he should have pretty much perfect and solid bodywork! :D

Next he's booked into the 'Bug Barn', Gloucester, 23rd April to have the top end of his 1200 engine rebuilt as he is a bit smokey on startup and leaks like a seive! *I've managed to procure a 2nd engine for £50 so they are gonna use both to make a decent engine up and replace/recon any bits as required. *

And before anyone says 'why not get a bigger engine and slam it' I don't want to, I like him stock and he's staying that way, he's been like it for nearly 50 years why change him now?!?!?!

That'll be his engine/body/interior all sorted all thats left is some new running boards (March payday ;) ) and eventually a new clutch/gearbox when mine finally packs up.

All I want then is some period accessories like the spare wheel tool set etc which I can 'collect' at the various shows throughout the summer ;D

Once his interior/bodywork has been done i'll post up some piccies :) *Classy Campers take pics as they do the work so i'll post up a mini resto thread of the work they've done :D

Oh and I need to work out why his interior light worked for two days then stopped working again! *;D

Sounds like Harry has a busy couple of months coming up *;) We have made a start on our bugs interior, just deciding on what seating we want etc... We are keeping her as she would have originally been inside and we have colelcted a few period bits to add to her for the shows. I keep meaning to post some pictures of her on here but we need new ones now as we fitted some new running boards to her at the weekend and shes looking rather lovely ;)

I think you should keep Harry stock if thats what you like as at the end of the day its your car and he is your project and i personally think he looks good as he is *[smiley=thumbsup.gif]

billybug
21st February 2007, 23:54
Cheers - thats the plan :)

I just wish the previous owners hadn't ripeed out hs original interior, i've seen pics of it and other than being a bit dirty and a small rip it was pretty much mint! Now he's got a red and black interior - which is kinda like he could have had so not too far from stock :)

If I had muchos money i'd make him as close to original as I could get - that would include tracking down a '58 engine, not a '64 engine like he has now ;)

billybug
8th March 2007, 21:35
Got his drivers door card and new steering wheel fitted tonight, looking pretty good I reckon! - Sorry for the crap quality, taken at night on my phone!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/DSC00121.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/gertiebug/DSC00120.jpg

Gonna fit the passenger doorcard and repair the gearbox axle boots on the weekend, and strip out the interior in the back, and remove the passenger seat ready for his bodywork on Monday, so its nice and easy for them to get around inside of him! :)

In 2-3 weeks he'll be back and body/interior wise he'll be pretty much finished! *All he'll need is a damn good clean! ;D

Then its just fit his new engine or rebuild this one and he'll be done! :D

billybug
9th March 2007, 00:46
LOL! yep, once I bought the right size socket! ;D

I kept touching the horn wire on the wheel/socket and Harry was beeping as I undid the bolt ;D it was like he was saying owwwwwww!

Shamrockez
9th March 2007, 00:50
;D bless him!!! Bella's horn is wired up to a bizzare button on the dash. Everytime I press it, when I release the pressure it springs out at me, so I have to spend 10mins looking for where it escaped to ;D :-[

billybug
9th March 2007, 09:16
LOL! You'll have to rewire that as well then ;) ;D

Shamrockez

Yup! Just need a horn button now.... :-/ Did Harry's come off easily?

billybug
9th March 2007, 09:43

Need to paint it tho to match the shiny steering wheel now!

Don't forget when you wire Bella that the horn wire runs up the middle of the steering column ;)

Shamrockez
9th March 2007, 09:45

9th March 2007, 09:47
Its a bug....in my bug! ;D

(its a bug air freshener :) )

Shame you bought a steering wheel, if you wanted a ratty one you could have bought mine!

Shamrockez
9th March 2007, 09:49
Yeah I got this over a year ago now... it was mint when I got it but since then I've managed to drop it a couple times and get my mucky paws all over it so it's getting rattier by the day ;D :-[

Just been perving over rear blinds and bambus parcel shelfs :-[ they so pretty!

Think white would be a good colour for the body, go well with the interior

Nah he's staying black ;) He still has most of his OG paint inside/underneath, plus he had a body only respray 2yrs ago, just having some mild resto done to the rear quarters, the heater channel, and where I cracked the bonnet, he'll be pretty much perfect then!

Looking very smart Luke 8-) how did the gearbox bits go?

billybug

OK, except I only bought one set of jubilee clips as he already had them on the other side, but the old ones broke, and the only place that sells them big enuf is the hardware store in Oldland Common and they are shut on a Sunday so i'll have to finish him off first thing tomorrow before he goes to Weston ::)

His gearbox was nearly out of oil tho! *Took 2 litres to refill him! :o

Got two bolts to tighten on the side as they are seeping oil and finish the gators and fingers crossed his gearbox is leak free....

I did do some more poking with my screwdriver tho.....

i'll take that screw driver away ;D

2l :o Neither Joey nor Bella took that from empty! They had 1.5 to 1.75 which filled them.

According to the book it'll take 2.5 litres? *And that was filled to just below the filler hole. I did manage to get gearbox oil in my hair tho :-?

Found some little holes - all connected to the rear quarters, just a bit more to add for the bodyshop to do! ::) ;D *

Underneath tho he's really good, its just his rear quarter area thats taken a battering! *Also got his reserve fuel tap on and working (well I think it is, I need to run out of petrol to test ;D ) and stripped his interior out the rear, all thats in him seat wise is the drivers seat - I figured it would save them a bit of time, plus make it easier for them to get round inside of him.

Also looked at his wiring - its got extra bits than the Samba diagram for the headlights... ;D

What's the extra bits for?

Cool I never tested Bellas, hopefully it works lol. Not sure I really want to find out tho.

Perhaps yours takes more than our 2 did..... weird lol. Lol in your hair, nice!

Well a further update - no news on the body yet (no news is good news?) but the second hand engine I bought is good, has no oil leaks and good compression on all four cylinders, so he goes in on the 4th for the engine swap, i've told them I need him done by Easter!

Also on the way are some shiny new running boards and a fitting kit from GSF :D

Amy - if you're at work, they might block photobucket (my work do) so I can't see my pics either - until I get home ;D

Ian - yep, for what i've now spent I reckon I could have bought a fully resto'd bug :o part of me wishes I did :-[

Glad the other engine is ok :)

Me too!

Not sure whether I should just clean up and sell Harrys current engine, or try and rebuild it?

I might part it out actually and keep the block, i've got a spare 6v coil, fuel pump, clutch, 6V flywheel, Dizzy/cap, carb (which works OK), front pulley, dynamo, fan housing, fan belt, the pipes the carb bolts too, spare exhaust - phew I think thats it!

Also up for sale soon will be a pair of OK running boards, harrys current spare wheel, which I think is a '67 only wheel, but is a wide 5, 5no crossplys, and an Xbox with 15 games (currently in the for sale section) :)

If I were you, I'd keep most of it as spares :) you know it all works so if anything ever breaks on the other engine you have a spare sat waiting :)

Yeah thats true - but the need for cash at the mo to pay for all this is greater!

I'll worry if and when it goes wrong! ;D

Got/getting some more new bits for Harry (pics will follow later!)

Got some new Resto-quality running boards with the correct trim
Some Maltese crosses for the jacking points
managed to procure a wiring cover for the under bonnet from Jim
Ordered an under bonnet carpet set from Spirit of the 50's
New interior light

And apart from re-undersealing him, painting the centres of his wheels red, repainting his horn push, and getting the engine fixed, thats all Harry's getting for a very long time now (apart from a gearbox if his goes! and oil and petrol as required ;) ) as I need to save for a house!!!!

He's not back from the bodyshop yet I really hope its in the next few days!

Got a few more little things, won an original 1958 Beetle brochure on Ebay (nice bit of history to have!) and bought a MPH speedo (Harrys in KPH)

Also got a call from the bodyshop, I can collect him Thursday night - I just hope he looks as good as i'm hoping! :-/
