After a few complaints we're adding swear filters for all you potty mouths, please pm me any words that the swear filter doesn't filter out and I will add them to the list, these should already be banned :)

I'm no fan of forced censorship.
I have always done my best to limit the severity of any swearing on here. Hence why the other day i used the word twat as opposed to what i was really thinking. ;)
Self policing is normally the best policy but if you've been having enough complaints i don't blame you. I suppose to run a forum, you need to keep as many people happy as possible.
The funny thing with swear filters is that anyone with a slightest hint of intelligence can decypher what the word should be anyway. Putting **** does little as there's only a couple of words that it could be. ;)
Personally i'm of the opinion that swear words are just words, the majority of people swear and i'm suprised that there are so many people online who seem to take offence.
There is a time and a place for everything. I would never swear in front of old people or young children. However, depending on location, amongst my peers i curse like a sailor.
Swearing for the sake of it is sometimes tedious but every now and then there are some very good reasons to swear.
There are enough words in the English language to be able to avoid the need to use swear words but sometimes only a swear word will do. :D

I do think that sometimes when a forum is too tightly policed (which I have to say I think this forum is starting to lean that way) the fun and social side of things tend to disappear out of it.
This is my own personal observations and thoughts now so dont take any offence, but of late I've noticed a fair few posts/threads being deleted locked or moderated because there has been a few miswords or arguments or there has been some swearing/sexual/dirty references, now I know we want to keep this a nice place to visit, however a thread where people argue or swear or tell dirty jokes/innuendos, I dont think, always needs to be locked or moderated. There are of course certain things that should not be tolerated and that is things like Racism, some forms of sexism (again this goes back to allowing dirty jokes/innuendos), bullying, and harassment. At the end of the day we are all adults here and therefore dont require to be 'nannied' if some people take offence to certain things then maybe they just shouldn't read it?
Personally whilst VZi can be quite hostile at times, their Laissez Faire attitude to most things is what makes it a cool place (imho) and whilst I wouldn't advocate Evvo becoming that lax, a certain amount of banter/swearing/adult humour is not a bad thing and allows people to build up a rapport and relationships. Perhaps instead of moderating everything (which can make things VERY boring on here) why not put a disclaimer like on VZi before logging in asking you to verify that you are over 16 as there are going to be the odd swear word/adult reference.
Also most things tend to self moderate, ok there has been certain problems in the past with some individuals and thats where the moderators need to step in and act, however where odd threads get slightly out of hand or the 'c' word is used a couple of times (big deal imho - try coming onto some of the building sites where I work, you'd have a heart attack!) deleting threads & banning people is a bit extreme.
Again this is all IMHO and not aimed at anyone in particular just my own observations of how things have been of here in the last 6 months or so :)
Also this isn't my objection to the swear filter either as tbh I dont think they make a lot of difference, as was said above you can work out the swear word anyway!

We are trying to keep this site a family friendly site though, you can`t really say that of Vzi.
Most things we do tend to leave to moderate themselves but some members wind each other up and if we don`t do something then things get out of hand. There have been accusation of damage to cars for example ...
As for banning people, I have only ever banned 2 that weren`t spammers - one was Blugg and the last one asked for her account to be deleted.
Moving and deleting threads as often as not is done at the request of the thread starter.
I personally aren`t too bothered by the "C" word, but others are so we have to moderate accordingly.
BTW, if you want heavy handed modding, try E38
1958 Harry
12th October 2009, 13:17
Thats what I'm getting at tho G - most people dont want heavy handed modding like the E38 forum or some of the other car forums out there.
And family friendly is great and it should stay that way, to a point, however are there really any people on here under 16?
Like I said I'm not advocating we go the way of VZi, but I do think some of the modding on here is a bit heavy handed at times, I can think of a thread the other day where a few dirty comments were made (nothing offensive imho) and we were told to tone it down, yet it was all in good jest from everyone participating.
Also from a personal POV I'd like to be involved more behind the scenes now of Evvo as I've been here from the start so would like a say in how things are run/the direction we are going, if you get me :)

Don`t think there`s many, if any, under 16`s on here but there`s nothing to stop them coming on here.
Also, by the nature of the car we are going to get a lot of girls on here and some of them (!) may get easily offended.

Theres no need for swearing on a forum.

Oooh now if we could edit the swear filter to change the swearwords to one of them - now that would be cool - and funny.
It would also poo poo any arguments as you no one could insult each other!
Or even better change them to car names, so the C word could come out as Citroen, the F word Ford, the S word Smart, etc etc, so instead of calling someone a f''ker you'd call them a Ford - which actually is more insulting! ;)

Skoda is part of VAG and at the risk of sounding like an old git, some of the new ones are pretty damn good

Skoda's are awesome cars. The Fabia VRS will give the majority of peoples bugs on here a good run for their money. But yeah they are VAG but mainly the only components that are shared are engine components and chassis.
Still tho.. good motors.

When i was young, growing up on the IOW there was a guy who mid mounted a lotus engine in a old matt black Skoda Estelle fastback..... that thing was rapid.... and gave me a kind of liking for skoda..... but then i've always supprted the underdog.... ;)
anyway back on topic, swear words changed to non offensive words would be funny! as it stands if you wnated to rate someones car as five star, you'd have to spell it to avoid upseting them..... eg - "your car is *****"
Graham

There`s a rather rapid red Skoda estate unmarked police car in Weston. I regularly see him pulling over boy racers who wouldn`t let a Skoda estate overtake them

Swearing looses its impact if not used in moderation. Hence littering posts with Cs & Fs just sounds like you're uncouth and becomes a rant!
However there's little that can beat simply adding a single sweary word to emphasise a point!
For example, that posh bloke in 'Benidorms' name-calling tirade at the scouse 'girlfriend' last week was hilarious!

Fecking laughing my ass off at the swear filter.
Feel like i'm back at school or at home again "What did you say? Come over here and let me tan your hide, you little git". Hey ho.
Seriously though if people are that easily offended then they should switch off their broadband, far far worse out there in cyberland.
Plus being as this is an owners club forum, then you would guess that pretty much all of the members on here would be of an adult age to be able to own a car, just my 2p.

I am perhaps one of the old school as far as swearing is concerned yes i swear like a trooper in work but not when females are about ( but there are not many on the shop floor) i was always taught too leave bad language at the factory gates, which i do, well 95% of the time something a lot of people of today and not just the youth have seem to have forgotten or just cant be bothered and using bad language when typing on a forum just astounds me,swearing is an spontanious emotive response which can, at the right time have the desired and sometimes very funny effect , but typing the F and the C word has no effect its too premedative, not funny and does not help bring over the point someone is trying too make and also shows the sign of a bad vocabulary.
