Seen the 08 BMW's lately they have cool looking Number Plate lights.
You too can have them on your Beetle.

Unscrew the self tapper screws (2 x per lamp) and carefully prise out the lamp lens from the lamp housing.
Once inside the lamp you will find a festoon 36mm type bulb.
(Some Later Beetles may use a capless 501 type bulb)

Which ever Bulb is fitted the same fitting instructions apply - Remove the old bulb and replace with the cool new Bulb.

(Note: in the above picture the LED's are facing the WRONG way)
Before re-fitting the Lamp back into the Lamp housing make sure the LED's are pointing towards the clear part of the lens.
Once fitted back on the car - Hey presto - Cool Number Plate Lights
