I doubt it will be your gearbox gone tbh - it's very rare for that to happen. Can you select gears with the engine off? Did you adjust the clutch cable correctly?

it goes into gear with the engine off yeah and the clutch was fitted and adjusted but not adjusted after date, dont tellme its jsut gunna be teh clutch :( ive got MAJOR! ideas for it now haha, i worked out ill be pushing like 120 BHP :( lmao... out of a beetle lmao how mad is that haha and my car will be weighing like 900kg lmao.. ill be pushing out more weight/power ratio than most 2 litres lmao :D:D

It could just be the clutch. Wind the adjuster in and see if you can get gears again.

or it could be that it was wound in too much before and the release bearing had collapsed.

You can get a 2nd hand gearbox for the same price as a new clutch ;)

What you thinking engine wise?

IMHO if your cars nice and solid (ie no grot) then go for it, if the body's ropey personally I'd rather spend the money on making it mint :)

From a 1.6 aircooled you'll have problems reaching much more than 70bhp. And then it probably won't be the best to drive...

na with a performance 1.6 with like lightended fly fly and all that, duel webbers, 4 - 1 manifold, then bore it out more, u can reach it :D lol, ive done my research haha :D and with putting it into my car, im buying a 1641 beetle with like a few body rusts and stuff, and then putting most of that onto my car, sell all the spares and then for my birthday ill haev like 32,000 to spend making everything mint :D lol

If you bore it out more, it won't be a 1600 any more ;) - surely easier to buy bigger barrels and pistons then have them bored out???

A friend of mine has a 1641 with twin webers, 4 into 1 manifold it rolling roaded at 64bhp.

Trust me, a 1776 making 100bhp will be much more driveable on the street than a 1641 making 100bhp :)

The first place to look for HP gains is in the carbs and intake. Stock VW manifolds and heads are pretty restrictive, power wise.

yh, is ur m8s a normal 1841 with webbers and 4 to 1? cuz i was looking at one like fully modified lol :D, which jsut the engine was going for £1200 lol, its gunna take me ages to gtet it as quick as i wont it and alot of time and money but it will be worth it lol :D

It's fairly standard otherwise, yeah. I still reckon a 1600 won't be that pleasant to drive (lumpy idle) if you have the sort of cam needed to get 100bhp from a 1600.

I only paid £200 for the 1641 in my bug, complete including carbs, tinware etc...

Probably about 65bhp, but that's a fair amount in a bug ;) - Kadrons give more low down torque than the webers afaik.

Bunkerbilly, first of all i love reading your posts they make me laugh your so full of enthusiasm and rightly so!

A 1300-1600 swap is easy just bolt it in!
i've gone 1200-1641cc in my buggy in 15mins

i've now spent over 2k on parts to build my new 1641cc with a stock 34pict carb it'll spin my 245/50/17 rear wheels so there is no lack of torque, i now have megasquirt fuel injection based around stock mk2 golf parts and it runs very strong, (sorry i don't know how much power, but i'm used to an evo fq400, so i know figures) i'm planning a turbo in the future which should satisfy my blood lust,

to be honest is you need more than 120hp in a beetle on the street then you should consult a doctor, if thats all you want then i recomend the above, either way you can screw it out of a 1641, or you could build something bigger, just buy the best you can afford and don't look back, lifes too short!!

I'm off to strap a super charger(not g60) to my mk1! and yes my doctor is unavaliable! see you in a&e!!
