The easiest way is to read the labels on everything before you eat it,the shock of how many calories are in some foods will make you want to cut down, some seemingly innocent foods are packed! if your used to eating sweet dairy products and crisps the hardest bit is losing the craving,
personally i cant afford to eat!

the thing is I already did this whole change of of diet thing
so i cut out most of my sweet stuff
we have skimmed milk
I eat fruit a few times a day instead of traditional snacky foods
I drink lots of water while at work
we have meat/fish with veg for dinner
slice of toast or bowl of porridge/oat cereal stuff for brekkie
been trying to write myself a plan for the next week sticking to 1000 calories and Im really struggling lol

Just a tip..... rather bizzarely something can be low in calories but quite high in fat. So look and make sure there's less than 5g per 100g ;)
personally, I've never been able to follow a diet and count calories. I just try and stick to three meals a day, and no chocolate or crisps. Porridge is a great start to the day, it really holds off the hunger pangs. I managed to loose 2.5 stone in 16 weeks that way. I don't think that I could stick to 1000 calories a day though. Good luck.:)

gotta be honest this kind of diet has never worked for me before, but there was something about the doctors appointment that made me want to prove them wrong.....they seemed to be suggesting i was lying about what i eat etc :(
I feel that I should add that I started power walking at the same time. If you walk at a rate of 4mph(not as easy as it sounds) then you will burn fat. Along with eating regular meals and not eating between meals, I managed to loose about 3 pounds a week. I have managed to keep my weight off for two years, I have continued to walk and I do on average 18 miles a week and I can eat what I like. This may seem like a lot to do, but if you try and build walking into your every day life and walk short distances when you normally jump in the car you will burn calories. What Dub-Diva says about fat is true, When I was dieting and I wanted a treat, I would have jelly babies or marshmallows. They are quite high in sugar, but have next to no fat in them, they taste so good when you haven't had sugar for a while. I'm sure that your doctor has told you to keep a food diary, I found and still find that you often eat more than you think. I'm terrible for going into the kitchen, grabbing a chunk of chocolate and for some reason you don't tend to count it in you daily diet. Your brain can trick you into thinking that you have eaten less because you did it on the go.
Having said all that, I think if you doctor has given you this target then he should have given you a diet plan to use as well. There's not much food in a 1000 calories.

My brother had to have emerg surgery a few weeks ago where they removed a large section of his bowel so since then he's had to totally change his diet, he has loads of books so I'll see if I can pinch any tips on good fats/bad fats/ etc .... I'm liking the idea of marshmallows although I would want to dip them in melted chocolate :p I think I just need to cut back on chocolate and actually do some exercise !!

1000 calories is sod all, If you have a bowl of cereal in the morning and a sandwich for lunch you have used up the best part of 500. Chuck in a yoghurt and a kit kat and it leaves you 300 for your dinner. That will get you a chicken breast and some rice!
Prepare to starve!....Actually sorry thats not very constructive is it? I cant help, I'm 5 stone overweight and need Magners and kebabs to survive!

Exercise is the answer. When I went on my diet I had been powerwalking for about a year, a friend who also wanted to loose some baby weight then started power walking with me and dieting at the same time and the weight just fell off her. I was doing about 18 miles a week over three nights and eating three meals a day, feeling hungrey most of the time! by the end of 16 weeks I had a smaller appetite and I had lost nearly two and a half stone. on the subject of fats, saturated=bad, polyunsaturated=better, monounsaturated(olive oil)=the best.
A lot of people think that power walking is an easy option, but walk at a speed that gets you hot, sweaty and out of breath and you will burn fat. I have never found a better way of controling my weight. And it goes a long way to getting rid of your tummy.

i agree exercise is the answer. if like me, u dont like doing it on your own u could get a exercise bike or a stepper and do it in front of the tv. its amazing how much u forget what you actually doing when ure concentrating on hollyoaks dramas!
i think exercise and diets are 2 of the most boring things in the world so u need to change it around and make it a bit more interesting or you will get more and more slack and slowly give up. i dont have a clue how u'd make it exciting though, any ideas.......

I don't think I would put exercise and excitement in the same sentence, but I think if you have a goal it helps. I hate the gym and any kind of exercising indoors, but at certain times of year it has to be done, but while its fine you can get out of the house and do something. Cycling is another favourite of mine, but walking or running burns the most fat.

Why have you been cut down to 1000 calories a day??? You aren't even fat, or even mildly overweight!
I'm a fat fu#ker and I asked about losing weight and all she gave me was a leaflet and told me it 'might' be a good idea to lose weight!

at least you got a leaflet lol I just got told to cut down to 1000 calories and coem back in a month :(
anyway I have been doing it for a week ish now (although not as strictly as I should be cus Im on holiday lol and there has been lots of eating out and on the go and stuff)
Its ok but I think 1000 is a bit hopefull, as said before its not a lot so Im trying to keep near 1000 - 1100 ish
more exercise will probably be the way forward, I used to have one of those steppers that I loved, I did half an hour of a morning in front of the tv and it was great so I think I might get that back off my mum and start doing that again

Four years ago, I was 38 and 23st! I was always a good swimmer and I went swimming one day and struggled to do 12 lengths. I decided that I didn't wanna be fat and 40 so I made the change. Cut out all the crap, junk food, treats & snacks and had Bran Flakes for breakie, salad butties for lunch and an evening meal heavy on the veggies.
I also started exercising. Swimming first, got up to a mile per session (64 lengths in 25m pool, 45mins-ish!) 4 times a week and the weight fell off! I lost 6 stone in the 1st year down to 17st.
Swimming got boring though so I joined a gym and used the machines for the next year, toned up, got fitter, lost another stone to 16st but that also gets boring after a while.
So I changed gym and started doing classes. Circuits, Body Pump, Boxercise, LBT (legs Bums & tums!) anything. They motivate you, you meet people rather than everyone just on the machines with their i-pods on and they are fun.
After 18 months, that gym (Fitness First) became a bit shabby so another change to a new JJB with a pool. Changing reinvigorates you and you meet more new people. I'm thrashing the pool again and doing all the classes I can. Current weight 13 st 13lb. It can be done. I don't stick to stupid tiny amounts of food, I just eat properly and train hard but it must be fun. Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calories per day!
Certain foods make you crave. If eat chocolate, I crave it for three days then it fades. Just eat fruit for sweetness, drink lots of water (2l of sparkling water is 17p at Asda if you like fizzy drinks) and load up your meals on fresh, steamed vegatables. It can be done, I've done it!
Good luck!

Blimey well done you ^^^ :D
thats very very impressive
well after talking to a few people I have decided I cant cut down much more on my food, I eat fruit all day and dinner tends to be a piece of steamed chicken and lots of veg (or similar)
So I am getting back on the exercise instead.....I felt great when I used to go to curves everyday.....I cant afford to join curves again or join a gym so I will be trying some new things
I have a bike so will be going on more bike rides...just need to find somewhere to get started (I get a little scared of cars and things lol)
also the stepper is back out now so thats good

Changing diet and maintaining happiness is one of the hardest things to do...
My girl has almost lost two stone now, but it wasn't until she joined slimmers world that she managed it. Weight watchers and my advice never worked for her. We are all different in body and mind, so loosing weight is never going to be an exact science.
Gotta say that I find the idea of a doctor saying drop to 1000 calories ridiculous. A lot of people loose weight by shifting the source of those calories. I went from a high carb diet to a hight fat one. I even upped the calories. I lost fat and managed to retain muscle weight (my goal) and ended up lighter.
I'd also say that the old "you got to burn more than you put in" is misleading. Loosing weight is 90% diet and 10% exercise. If you up the exercise without finding the diet that works for you, you could end up burning bone for energy instead of fat and that will only stimulate your bodies need for more food.

1000 calories !!!
jeez , 2 big snickers bars are more than that !!!
501 each , i was snacking on them when i need to up my intake ;)
snacking on tuna fish is my favourite , but gets tedious after a while :(
you could supliment your diet with amphetamine sulphate ?
i saw it work for lost of people in the late 80's/early 90's .

Myself and my fiance Heather joined something called Lighter Life a few months back...Heather started it first after getting told about it from our neighbour
My trouble is that I do a desk based job, and I'm heart lazy...hence my weight has gone up and down a lot in the last couple of years and our upcoming wedding made us both want to finally give ourselves the push we both needed
It is a fairly stringent diet initially (you cut out all food completely and use their recommended food packs instead), and gives you 500 calories a day, low in fat, carbs, but with all the protein and minerals your body requires. It puts your body into ketosis, so the extra energy your body needs is obtained from fat burning...a man requires 2500 calories a day on average, and 2000 for an average woman
Main downside - apart from the stringent diet, the cost...£60 per week for supplied foodpacks and support sessions. I was pretty sceptical at first, but Heather lost nearly 14lbs in the first month, so I started it as well. The cost for us both isn't as bad as it sounds, as we are buying no other food, no alcohol, no takeaways or restaurant meals...:D
Water intake is important...3-4 litres a day required to keep you hydrated
My weight loss in the last 12 weeks has been 49lbs, and Heather isn't far behind that total either. My BMI has dropped from 34 to 27 at present, and I'm aiming for between 70-80lbs loss in total
Some before and after 10 week pics here...still losing weight at the moment so by time I hit my target weight, I will add more pics
www.peterhope.plus.com/weight.pdf
The interesting thing about Lighter Life, which differs from other "miracle diets" is that you go to counselling which is there to change your preconceptions about food and to dispell some myths, and to let you recognise what triggers you have for food, and how to avoid them...helping to avoid you falling back into the same old routine and putting weight back on :)
Do a Google search for Lighter Life and see if it could work for you :)

sounds interesting........but will it all go to pot when you eat 'normally' again, just because you will have to eat more calories than you are currently having?
do they tell you much about people that have done it and continued to stay at there new weight?
just interested to know, as its something I always wander about with these kinds of 'diets'

Going forward, I will have to be really disciplined, as I love nothing better than stuffing myself with stuff like bread, potatoes, chocolate, etc :D
Nothing wrong with any of these when I commence a full proper menu, but I will need to plan a diet for myself that avoids excess calories and quantities of food ....need to have some variation within the menu, I think.
i have a mountain bike on order (handy for the hills and mountains literally at my back door :D ), and will be going back to swimming at least twice weekly...I used to swim a lot when younger
Forgot to say about another downside...clothes :D I have had to bin two suits for work as they just fall off me now and most other clothes/shirts are just too big for me now ...I have lost 4 inches from chest, 3 from waist, and 3 from hips
I bought a kilt for the wedding earlier this year..and it is now stupidly big...it literally falls off me now, even at tightest setting...not an ideal scenario as I will be a true Scotsman on the big day (3 weeks today :) )
Do a search for Lighter Life...their website is has plenty of anecdotes from those that have lost weight and kept it off :)

I have a friend who has done Lighter Life. She started it in January and lost loads of weight (dropped from a size 24 to a size 14), but she is having difficulty returning to normal food after the packets. She had to be incredibly disciplined to stay on the packets, too. My understanding is that Lighter Life treats food as an addiction, and this is why you have to go "cold turkey" and have the counselling.
I think it's great if you can stick with it, especially if you have someone to do it with, but when I considered it for myself I thought I would find it very difficult, as I have a husband and two children, none of whom are overweight, and for whom I cook every day.
I recently read "Eating Less - say goodbye to overeating" by Gillian Riley, and I have found it very helpful. I read it about a month ago and I have lost a stone since. Like Lighter Life, it treats overeating as an addiction, but it doesn't cost nearly as much, and it leaves you to work it out for yourself. This suits me, both for the practical reasons I have given, and also because I don't like being told what to do! I can really recommend it if you feel you've tried every diet and they all work for a little while, then you put it all back on again and more!

well I have been just trying to keep an eye on my eating
and trying to up the exercise more again (we are getting a turbo trainer later so that should help a bit :) )
im trying not to think about it all too much to be honest, I think if I think about it a lot I get depressed...then I want chocolate lol
so if I try not to concentrate on it too much I think I am better off, I tend to eat less just because Im not concentrating on food all the time
Im going to try this theory for a while at least

I started to feel really unwell recently, i was drinking and drinking and had a constant thirst, was absolutely drained of energy and didnt feel good at all, Eco finally harassed me enough for me to go to the doctors and after tests was told that I have high blood sugar (pre-diabetes) and was told to cut down my sugar and fat and boost the fibre content of my diet... oh, and I also got a smacked wrist for only eating one meal a day (oops).
I have now cut out as much sugar as I can, make sure stuff is low fat (and low calorie too) and am eating more fibre. So far in 2 weeks I have lost about 4lbs and I joined our local gym too.
I have to go back for more tests in 3 months and if the low sugar and fat and high fibre diet doesn't sort out my blood sugar, then the doctor will be treating me for type 2 diabetes (gulp).
I now force myself to have breakfast (still not convinced but I'm giving it a go) then have something light for lunch and a good dinner and am trying really hard not to eat between meals but it's really hard at times.

The worry over developing Type 2 diabetes was another factor for me in sorting myself out.. it was something that I'd never worried about before , but when you read up on the implications...
Had my weekly weigh in tonight...5lbs loss since last week after going up 2 the previous week (beer, curry and stag nights are not good for losing weight :D )
Now just 2 lbs short of 4 stone loss...so fingers crossed that by this time next week, will have broken that pyschological barrier :)
