Mr Diva was driving to work this morning and our splitty decided to put her engine into meltdown and it seized. Had it recovered to our local dub garage and they've told us the damage is terminal :( Mr Diva has had enough now, he needs a reliable daily driver or he won't have a job to drive to! Really don't know what to do... time to sell her maybe :(
Anyone want to buy our splitty, she just needs a new engine :(

Splittys are worth £££££ even with no engine!
Worth putting a new one in for sure!

Yeah get a cheap angine and stick it in! You'll get more for it that way! Theres engines on VZi OK and cheap. Harrys engine was only £50 and has been brilliant - fit it yourself and away you go!
Also if you wanna keep the splitty why not just buy an el cheapo banger as a daily, get yerself down the auctions, £460 bagged me a P reg Fiat Marea a few years back - was the most reliable car I've ever owned! You'll get even better for your money now :D

We are running out of funds for the bus as we are trying to buy our house and 3 kids too, well you know  Mr diva really needs something more reliable so a 10k t4 fits the bill.

EDIT: we already own the kids :D but they are costing us ££

i did wonder about who you were buying the kids from
what a nightmare chick, if you can get a cheap engine to pop in that would make it worth a few more pennies, but im sure you would have no trouble shifting it without.....you just wont get as many of that lovely money :D

It's the long block part of the engine we need... will have to look out for a cheap one.

:( to melt the longblock something serious must have gone wrong! Was there any symptoms? Was there still oil in it?
£300ish should get you a decent 2nd hand 1600. Or £1k for a brand new one.
Bella's 1200 was £50 too and so far so good! :D
Can't blame you on the T4 thing tho - I think they're a very sensible option - especially when you have kids and want a reliable vehicle.

We just bought a mk3 golf 1.8cl from flea bay for £180, after replacing the header tank with one in the shed it's perfect, cheap cars are out there, would be a shame to part with such a classic,

Thats bad news!! I can understand the need for reliability though. Cant you keep it as a show bus and buy a cheap watercooler to run around in?
Splitties are going up and up in value and its a real investment for your kids future! were talking near on 20 grand for a good example! I saw some at volksworld for 15 grand!

If you can try and keep it - I've done everything I can to keep Harry when we bought the flat, it was real touch & go for a while but I managed to sort it so I could keep him :)
You'll regret selling the bus, just get a cheap relaible Daily - thats what I'd do :)

Not trying to stir it up but i think a T4's a great idea
Seen a beauty at Bus types 1.9tdi 50k with a brand new camper conversion inside, lowered on a8 rims i believe it looked great!! £8.5k Thought it was quite good value and you'd free up cash from the split even

We've now decided to sell the split and buy a single cab (think Mr wished he'd bought one instead of the bus lol) AND an older T4 that has camper conversion capabilities... so, two rides for the price of one, we'll just buy a big tent! lol
Think we have an engine sorted out.. we have a choice of 2 - a 1641 with single webber carb for £450 or a standard 1600 engine for £250 that we can use the long block off and swap over, keeping our twin kadron carb setup, and return the unused bits and he'll buy them back off us. Just got to find the pennies to buy the engine in the first place... if we had spare the £ laying around, we'd have just gone straight out and bought a chuck-away car off e-bay and sorted the splitty engine later.

Could I suggest a T3 instead of a T4 you know they're the best vans VW ever made (in TD form :) )

Agreed!
No old VW is ever gonna be that reliable as a daily (well, the majority won't be anyway).
I drove my old bug everyday for nearly 2 years, and although I love her, I was glad when I didn't have to worry anymore if I was gonna get home that night! Lol!
I think you guys are being really sensible and it's a great idea. Old veedubs are fun but not to the point where they are financially crippling you and the only thing keeping you holding on is for sentimental reasons! Keeping your job/house/kids are much more important than what's on your drive IMHO.
Anyhoo... will look forward to seeing the new rides soon! You shouldn't have any trouble selling the Splitty either, she's lovely! :)

The engine is being rebuilt this week (was done last week, but was taken apart again as there was something wrong with the valves ) the damage to the old long block was amazing... should be back on the road by the end of the weekend - hopefully
Also, we've umm'd and ahh'd for a couple of weeks now and have finally decided to go down the "as new as possible" T4 (or possibly T5) route, it will be more practically suited to our lifestyle and will mean we can go out as a family somewhere and not worry that we won't get there/back. Have seen a few that we really like... just gotta sell the splitty now... have put her on several sites so fingers crossed she'll go to a dub-loving home.
