As I have mentioned before I have been busy over the cold winter months stripping and rebuilding the engine for my 61 Ghia I have uprated engine from a 1584cc to a 1679cc by fitting larger Barrels and Pistons a performance Engle 110 Cam and twin Empi Kadron Carbs.I have taken care of cooling with full flow oil pump and external filter and done away with heat exchangers and fitted a fan housing without heater pipe outlets. Also uprated to an Alternator and electronic ignition and added a bit of Bling!!!!!!
The gearox is next inline for a makeover and service here are a few pics of progress

Hi Mate,
Cool car, cool reg, cool wheels and an engine thats "almost" as shiny as mine;)
Good work so far, everyone has a favourite model year and an early 60's ghia is near the top of my list, interested to see what else you have planned.

Did I see this on the Bus Station's website?
Which set of wheels are you using?

Hi Luce
Thanks its getting there now!
Yes you did see the Ghia on the Bus station blog Mark fiitted some adjusters to the front beam for me while we went over to the Isle of Wight for the weekend. It can go an 1 1/2" lower at front but I cant get it off drive without digging up the Tarmac!!!!!
The Empi 5 are off the Camper I was cleaning them up and putting new Red bands and centre caps on.

ah I see! We have black and polished 5s on our Bus :D I'm trying to convince Steve that we need redbands on the tyres to match the delux trim and seat beading - but we thought the front tyres might be a bit small - but yours look about the same size - what size are they? (the tyres).
Ah I thought so - they did my beam for my Bug so i was looking on their blog bit before I bought it and thought it was yours. Once mine's passed her MOT I'll send them a pic of mine fitted so they can add it to their blog :)

FRONTS are 185 /55/ 15s
REARS are 165 /65 15s
This is the second set ive fitted to the bus the fronts tend to ripple and come away I lost one completly on the way to the Reading meet last year I guess it maybe the weight of bus and the movement on sidewall of tyre when turning so ive put 5psi more in fronts to stiffen up side wall see if that makes a difference wait and see!!!!

Let me know how you get on. I was thinking of getting redwalls put into Robbie's wheels too - perhaps I could take his, and Joey's down to Bay Area Rods - cos they can gaft red rubber into the sidewall.
Mr P
1st April 2008, 08:59
Will do!
for a quick fix the bands look cool if you dont mind spending £40 every year for a new set as they tend to fad aswell and go pink!!!!!!!!but if you want them to last Id go with your plan and have the colour grafted on. Plus the biggest size is 16" and thats no good for Robbie.
Shamrockez
1st April 2008, 10:04
Yeah that's why we thought we'd get his grafted in. Flaps wouldn't be too bad on Joey cos he doesn't do much mileage, so might not get distroyed too fast - but then again if we're at BAR doing Robbie's, we may as well get Joey's done!

Just thought I would put a little update on my Ghia project stripped gearbox over the last couple of months and replaced bearings as every thing else seemed ok not bad for a 48 year old gearbox
Fitted all new seals gaskets etc painted and detailed its already to go back in car now just got to clean and paint chassis and engine bay.

are those colour gaitor boots any good? I can't get one side to seal on my Bug - I have the split type ones. I'm just doing it again for the 3rd time
Mr P
17th January 2009, 12:31
Luce these are the split type to but urathane not rubber and you get correct jubilee clips with the kit
The rubber type i fitted to my bus leaked too,Ive used blue gasket sealer on the joints and if you face the joint towards the back of vehicle they tend not to leak as the joint dosnt move about so much dont put joint at top as it flexs up and down and breaks seal
I got my gaitors from COOLAIR cost about £10

yeah I've just put one of mine back on covered in the blue sealant stuff. One side is perfect and doesn't leak. I had the one that didn't leak with the join at 3o'clock and the one which leaked was at 9o'clock, so I've put the leaky side to 3o'clock to see if that makes a difference.... fingers crossed! She dripped gearbox oil into my eye the other day - nice
Yep we always go to Dubfreeze :D

Thats a lovely ghia :) love those wheels with the red bands.
We had our old bay's tyres done by Bay Area Rods, we had some problems with the red bands popping out and wearing the tyre away, so much safer to get them done by BAR :D

how much does it cost to get the red bands done? I'd like to get my red Newbie done and our Splitty.

It was really resonable it was around £50.00 for the set of 4 on BRM 15's.
Its much much safer and will last a good while, its well worth it.
They were a good bunch of people, its a bit of a way to go (poole) but we took a day off and drove down and one of the guys even dropped us off into poole town/waterfront
Took a morning for them to do it.
I wanna get my bug done too. pretty sure they do them in different colour but red looks well nice ;)
