Can anyone help with my paint woes???
I'm trying to repaint Harrys seat frames the correct colour, I've rubbed all the frames down, wiped them over to make sure they are clean and started priming them, the trouble is the primer has gone like this:

Any idea whats gone on there? Its like its all separating out, I've tried putting it on thicker but then I just get loads of runs in the primer :(
Any help or tips anyone has would be much appreciated! I need to get the seats done asap as Harry has no seats!

Looks like it's reacted with something. Did you use panel wipe on it and have you used an etch primer?

looks like there is grease or something on there did you wipe it with thinners or a tack rag first may be worth getting an etching primer this will bit into the metal

I wiped them over with white spirit, made sure it was totally dry then sprayed them. I was using High Build primer as there were a few rusty bits on the seat frames so I got rid of it all first.
So I need to re-do them with etch primer? Do I etch prime, then normal prime, then paint them or etch then paint is ok?

etch prim rub back if needed then paint

Are they bare metalled? If they are then etch prime, light rub, high build, rub back then paint (or grey primer if the high build is the yellow filler primer off of halfords) bobs yer uncle
You have to prime over the top of etch before painting too :)
Beware the etch primer is ££££££

They are bare metal in places where there were rusty bits, but most of the seats frames still have the black paint on them.

my advice dude would be not to bother painting them yourself. I'd be tempted to strip the covers off and find a local place to get them powder coated to as close a colour to original as possible. It shouldn't cost a lot to get them done and they'll look like new.

Looks like you have sprayed too much primer. are you using rattle cans? There is a fine technique that is a pain to master. My advice, rub them down with wet and dry (but use it dry) then spray in short blasts across the metal as opposed to up and down. Does that make sense? I mean if the the bit you are painting is 10 inchs tall, spray left to right. You don't have to cover everything in primer in the first go, wait for it to dry and lightly rub down again, then spray again where you have missed.
then go onto paint (several coats again you don't have to cover everything in the first pass) then lacquar (sp). Oh and wait for a hotter day!!
I did my wiper arms last weekend and the primer went like that, then I read the instructions on the paint can and recovered it, they now look spot on.
Good luck.

mr diva heats the can up too by putting it in warm water for 5 mins before he uses it... and it always works better if the surface is warm, too.

Cheers for the tips everyone!
I ideally have to have them done before March 20th as thats when Harry goes in for his final bit of bodywork with Mark as otherwise I can't drive him there!
