Can anybody explain to me the different type of aircooled engines??

For example, what is a turnkey engine?

Cheers..

According to VZi ;)

Means an engine put in and ready to start :)

O.k i'll have abit of a go  ,

Short block i think you get , case , crank , heads etc

Turnkey , you get all the above plus carbs , dizzy and tins

is you buy a Turnkey from the states you can change the motors spec

E.G 1776 cc , twin 40's , 110 cam

or - 1776cc , twin 44's , 130 cam , race spec heads  .

With turn key motors you will still have to have it set up right when you put it in.

I built a beetle cup spec engine years ago and it's not that hard or ££££££ , 1641 cc barrells and piston kit (fits stright onto your 1300 or 1600 with no machine work) 041 heads , 009 dizzy and a duel 44 idf carb thats a lot easyer to set up and it dont need tuning like twin carbs do all the time  .

Feel free to correct me if the above is wrong cos it's been some time since i've had my mits on an air cooled lump :)

Turnkey, is exactly what it says, all complete, ready to fit, basically you fit the engine and turn the key ;) The engine is ready to run, just needs bolting to a car.

I thought (I could be wrong!)

A long block was the complete engine, ie has case, crank, heads, but no carbs, tinware etc

A short block is just that the block with the crank etc installed but without the heads etc bolted to it :)

and obviously there are any number of combinations in between :)

on the subject of turn key motors I have a 1600 type 1 engine sat in my garage that was taken from my bay when I upgraded it to a type 4 2.0

If you are looking for a replacement let me know, its been fully rebuilt, etc, let me know and I will send you more info

In our splitty we have a 1600 bug engine with a bug 1500 gearbox (straight axled) and in the bug we have a 1600 bus engine with the bug's original 1200 gearbox. I think most engines are interchangeable... as long as certain things match the setup. Could be wrong though - I'm still learning - I can label all the parts of the aircooled engine now, and kinda helped Mr Diva take the engine out of the bus last week... but as for pistons, crank cases and stuff I'm sooo lost lol

Hi, so are you looking to upgrade your engine or just seeing whats on offer out there, tuining aircooled stuff gets really expensive, I should know it cost a fortune to rebuild a type 4 and stick some nice twin carbs and zorst on it. It sound lush now though!!!!!!!!

Personally I really don't like type engines - I dunno where anything goes on them and they're just confusing!

Type 1 engines are sooo much easier to work on and look far less complicated!

You can't beat a 1600TP imho.

fear of the unknown with a type 4 style engine, it looks so weird until you strip it down, I have rebuilt type 1's which as easy, once the type 4 tin wear is off its the same only better made, the type 4 is so much stronger and won't get end float in a heavy type 2 bay like a type 1, only problem is cost of the parts, every single part is at least double the price of a type 1.

Just a note on a turnkey motor , my pal bought one from the states and yes you could bolt it in and make it start BUT it will need tuning cos when it's been tested it will have run on U.S fuel .

Also 1958 Harry dont your post say the same as what i said 8 hours before ya dude  .

And for tuning i dont think you can beat a good type 1 screemer  , old pal built a 2.4 Turbo type 4 lump   very quick but HOW MUCH ££££££££££ .

Just build/ buy a nice little 1641 lump like i said , good fun and cheap ish to run -see vid  http://youtube.com/watch?v=qr7tNZ84hjQ&feature=related

I like the simple 1200 nice :)

Same here but I am biased, a stock 1200 is reliable as fook.

I had a modded/trick 1200 motor years ago in my 2nd bug, it had the carb placed around the back of the fan , had to have a box built and cut a hole in the rear inside the car so it would fit , the only thing you could see when you looked at the motor in the car was 2 pulleys and a dizzy - all wires for that went into tins also   .

Heads were ported and polished and some other small bits so it went as well as my mates stock 1600tp .

Best stock motor i had was a 1500 , that went very well on a 1200 box till my mate took it for a joy ride and blow it up  , still that gave me chance to build a quicker motor :D
