Hey guys
Just wondering, if we do have to get a new engine for Olive, where you you recommend for a brand new one? We will be looking for a 1.8 or most likely 2litre.
Cheers! :D

I'd get a recon 2nd hand one if I were you. You need to get a specific one for an Auto.
Don't get the 1.8 - they've got loads of really hard to find parts on them. The 2.0 has much easier to find ones.

Hey Luc,
I've seen some on the 2L remtec ones from VW heritage they offer to convert them so they are 'automatic ready' for about £120 (I think!)
Where did Ria and Mark get theirs in the end? Heritage offer 2 yrs warranty with the first 1yr covering labour as well. But they are well expensive though!

I imagine they must cost you more than Olive did!

Read around on VZi Vickie - theres good and bad things said about Remtecs :)
Why not see if you can get a good second hand engine or get yours rebuilt? TBH if the case is OK getting yours rebuilt will give you a better engine at the end of the day, at least you'l know it'll fit as well.
Thats what I was recommended to do on Harry if this engine was no good :) and don't forget with Aircooleds new doesn't always mean better.

If it were me then i'd get the original engine rebuilt heard bad things about lots of these engine companies
And at least (assuming it is the original engine) it's the engine olive came with which has to be better at the end of the day
That or grab a cheap running 2nd hand engine to get her moving while you rebuild it
The place we got the vans engine from was kinda like a breakers but they specialise in engines, but they have been swines offering warrenties etc and claiming industry leading testing and TBH that aren't worth the paper they're written on, since the engine I got from them was worse than the original van engine
Cheap used engine to get her moving and rebuild the original I say :)

I'd put a post up on Vzi saying that you need an engine in good condition, possibly a rebuilt one.

Also if you found a good cheap 2nd hand engine you might not need to go to the expense of an engine rebuild for a good long while.
deffo the way to go is either rebuild or decent 2nd hand I'd say :)
And changing an Aircooled engine yourself really isn't as difficult as it sounds! Get an engine, save yourself a packet and change it yourself! I'll give you a hand and I'm sure Lucy would too - you could have the engines swapped in an afternoon.

Yep in and out very easy (even easier than my van)

Not as easy as a Split or early Bay tho ;)

there's only about 4 bolts holding the engine in, right?

yup :)
Just don't ask me and Luke to help - we end up undoing a bolt half way, pausing, then doing it back up again.... then repeat  :o

I think the only auto 1600 is from a Fasty? I don't think that would fit Olive's box :(

Bugger didn't realise it was an auto :)

There must be a way of making them fit? Is it the Bellhousing or something else thats different? Is Vickies a full Auto or Semi auto? In my Beetle book it said the auto (well semi-auto) boxes were simply standard 4 speed transmissions hooked up to a trick clutch and the action of moving the gear lever simple disengages the clutch and shifts gear?
Surely if thats the case an Auto engine can't be that much different to a standard engine?

I don't know much about them tbh. I guess you can convert a normal engine with the right clutch, starter etc?
I'm not sure a 1600 would be gutsy enough to be in an auto bay tho.
