Hello everyone,
After a great success last year with more than 40 cars attending, the Christmas cruise is on again this year.
It is taking place on Sunday 16th of December meeting on the Bristol Downs at 1pm - see the start place on the map. The cruise will start at 2pm sharp(ish) so please try arrive not much later than close to 1.30.

This is the route the cruise will take
http://tinyurl.com/yub7kw
Much more detailed instructions for the route can be found here:
http://www.jamestapper.co.uk/Cruiseroute2007.pdf
It has been modified slightly since last year due to a few traffic flow issues, particularly with problems over the suspension bridge. This year we will only drive under the bridge rather than over it.
The cruise will end up at the Golden Heart pub, Winterbourne. This is just off the Bristol ring road, with easy access to the M4 and M5.

Last year lots of cars were decorated for the event with lights, tinsel etc which was brilliant and really made people stop and stare even more - So this year, the more tinsel, fairy lights and other Christmassy tat the better!
There will be chocolate PRIZES! For the best decorated vehicle and the furthest travelled!
All old VWs are welcome - that includes T25s, new beetles, mk1/2 golfs etc. I'm not gonna say someone can't come!

If you have any problems or questions before the event, then email bristolchristmascruise@googlemail.com.
If you have any problems (break-downs etc) on the day or during the cruise, you can ring me on O79O5 I99849.
Please also feel free to bring walkie talkies on the cruise – we used them last year with some success.

Finally, if you are arriving from the North of Bristol on the M5, or on the M4, this map should help you arrive at the cruise start point.
http://tinyurl.com/2arf6p
And here are some more detailed instructions with photos.
http://www.jamestapper.co.uk/FromtheM4.pdf
If you arriving from the South on the M5, I’m afraid I couldn’t do a photo version of the route, but here is the map from the M5 junction
http://tinyurl.com/yugvrc
If you are arriving from somewhere other than the M4/M5, I suggest you click on this link - http://tinyurl.com/yqpsmf - and then change the “start location” to your postcode – Google maps should then give you full directions for getting to the start point.
So I will leave with a few pictures and a video of last year's cruise...
(thanks Saraj for some of the pictures)

It had better not conflict with anything, although there is a rugby match on on that day ;)

It took long enough to pick the date as it is :)

By the time we left some people in cars with no heating had been standing around freezing their bits off for over an hour! http://krazydubclub.co.uk/smf/Smileys/Lots_O_Smileys/tongue3.gif

Seriously, I'll see what I can do this year... but it is hard to know when is the "right" time to leave if you know what I mean? http://krazydubclub.co.uk/smf/Smileys/Lots_O_Smileys/glasses9.gif

Don't it start at 2? You'll be really late :)

Tofufi
4th December 2007, 15:09
We are leaving the downs at 2PM so please try to arrive around about half 1 (or before if you're keen!)

The map shows the route of the cruise - the green arrow is where we will be meeting.

The meeting place is on a road called Circular Rd - it doesn't have any houses directly on the road, hence it has no postcode.

If you click on this link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=1207380351154757726,51.470695,-2.633144&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=bs9+1ND&daddr=51.469408,-2.635088&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=16&sll=51.470076,-2.632298&sspn=0.005774,0.019741&ie=UTF8&z=16&om=1

it should be about a 0.4 mile journey - we are meeting on the curve of Circular road overlooking the A4 (Portway). The nearest postcode I could find is Rockleaze, which is BS9 1ND - this is where the map in the above link starts from.

On the above map, if you change the start address along the top (BS9 1ND) to your postcode it ought to give you directions to the place on Circular Rd from your house.

Alternatively, I will be posting directions from the M4/M5 motorways later this evening, as well as maps and instructions for the rest of the cruise route. :)

Fingers crossed - I was hoping to have them ready a week ago but computer problems have slowed things down - sorry!

Tofufi
5th December 2007, 22:30
Finally!

I’ve now edited the first post on this thread to include the full route map including detailed photo directions around the cruise route, and full maps and picture routes for those people arriving in Bristol from the M4 and M5.

11 days to go, so get decorating your vehicles :) – There will be a chocolate prize for the furthest travelled and also an (informally judged) best decorated vehicle prize – prizes will be given at 2PM on Sunday 16th Dec so don’t be late.

Even with the DBS lot you'll be getting off at the Cribbs junction for the downs so could we not rendezvous with you guys somewhere around there?

Shamrockez
11th December 2007, 19:46

Tofufi
11th December 2007, 20:44
I would have expected the DBS lot to get off the M5 junction before Cribbs (Junction 18)

I believe some of the VZiers are meeting near Junction 16, but the VZi thread is chaos at the moment :D

Oh, and Lucy, Luke - would it be possible to spread you guys out a bit on the cruise, each with a walkie talkie to we can communicate how things are going?
I have a feeling that if we get 60+ people turning up it will dissolve into chaos very quickly  and you guys probably know Bristol better than most ;)

Shamrockez
13th December 2007, 14:46
Could do... but

a) we don't use him in the winter anyway, so won't need heating in the summer

b) having J tubes makes it soooooo much easier to get to all the engine bolts!

c) they're cheaper than buying some decent exhangers that we're probably never gonna use.

1958 Harry
13th December 2007, 14:48

I have to have heaters in Harry - I think Gem would kill me if we didn't

Shamrockez

You're assuming we read the news :p

I've been living with no TV and no newspapers for 3 months and I still know about it... from reading forum threads

Hi all,

I’d just like to thank everyone who came today!

I think the official count was 109 cars leaving the downs, and that went to 110 when someone joined up at the Zoo. So 110 cars is a bit more than the 40 we had last year!

My apologies to anyone who got lost, next year we will have to find a route avoiding the city centre I think… just too many traffic lights to contend with. I’ll be posting about it sometime late next year so keep your eyes open…
I will also update you with photos and videos as and when I can :)

Congratulations go to Danny Lord (Ratty N reg bare metal Notchback) for winning the furthest travelled car award. And to Pete from the Forest of Dean for winning the best decorated car award.

Anyone who straps a fully decorated Christmas tree to the back of a pickup truck deserves chocolate in my opinion!

Hope to see you all again next year :D
