What year is your bug? mine is a '74 and there are 2 handles with black bobbles on near the handbrake that you move up and down for the heater channels to open or close...;)

Same with my 71. My 58 has a weird round knob thing - not that it'll work cos she's got j tubes and she's not going out when it's chilly lol

I cant see the pics in work, but if its the bendy plastic tubes you're missing you can get them from GSF :)

Been up there today to get a catalogue.. like a kid in a sweet shop browsing through it !!! lol..
Will there be heat coming out of the heat exchangers underneath the car whilst it running..??

depends if the flaps are open or not.

If your heater cables are connected and opening the flaps then yeah heat will come out under the car (providing the flaps are in the open position) if the cables are fooked/not connected then the flaps will be closed not letting any heat through.

lol you do know it doesn't work all that well when it's connected, right? Some work better than others, but in any case, it gets less warm as you slow down!

Might not be the most Original, but maybe get a heated seat mat from Halfords that plugs into your cigar lighter that you don't have  ;) :) :)

I was tempted to do that.. but i'm also tempted to buy some little electric heaters and fit them under the seats.. ha ha..

Lets hope the reason the heaters aren't connected is for another reason :(
Special K
13th September 2007, 09:32
And that reason could be ???:eek::eek::eek:

Just what i was thinking. Only thing i came up with was exhaust fumes getting in :(
Special K

which would mean new heat exchangers.... ??
Come on luke where ya gone??

Heat exchangers could be holed.
Shamrockez
13th September 2007, 09:53
Hopefully's it's not cos the heat escaped out of holed channels - they did look ok on the pics you sent tho. Have a good poke.

Cool air do a winter heating kit for Bugs:

Seriously though, you need to make sure that your heat exchangers aren't holed as that is potentially dangerous (they could leak exhaust fumes into the car :(). All of the other parts are available to connect from the exchangers into the rear of the body and onto the channels (inside sills). The two levers by the handbrake should control the rear flaps on the exchangers and the ones under the back seat i believe. The speed of the engine (fan) dictates how much hot air gets pushed through though, as someone said before, the more you're revving the hotter it feels. When its working, motorway driving is ace but stopping and starting round town is crap!!
If i were you i'd check that the flaps are closed currently on you exchangers as they aren't connected and will be letting hot air out and more importantly cold air in.
:D

They may just be disconnected from the last time the engine was fitted - some people don't bother fitting the heating back up, expecially if it's summer, or the car doesn't get used in the winter.
Or, got J tubes fitted like ours cos we know we won't use the heating.

the thing about not running with heating though, is that I reckon it will cause the channels to rust out quicker as they aren't being dried out with the hot air? Probably negligable though but i bet over a long time it could make a difference.

It is for us - we don't use the heating so don't put heat exchangers on - hence it's a hell of a lot easier to get to the engine bolts etc without them on there.
A lot of people recon the heating rots the channels out because of condensation.
Perhaps another reason why vehicles from hot countries are less rottern?

Harry was from a very cold country and his heater channels are OK? Mind you he does have an Eberspacher fitted.
The reason I said I hope its not another reason is some unscrupulous people disconnect the heaters to disguise the fact the heater channels (sills) are rotten and hot air is leaking from them.
Also if your heaters don't work whilst connected up and everythings OK it could be the heater channels have been repaired and the heating pipe inside may have rotted away. As long as all the outer sections are solid thats nothing to worry about, just means you'll be cold :(
